The Opportunity
As a Materials and Process Engineer, you’ll join our Mechanical Engineering team, reporting to the Principal Materials and Process Engineer. You’ll contribute to the management and control of the materials and processes used across Martin-Baker, ensuring they comply with customer, regulatory, and legal requirements through our Quality Management System.
You’ll work across a diverse range of materials and manufacturing processes, providing technical expertise and practical support to teams across the business. From developing and maintaining technical specifications to supporting material reviews, defect investigations, and engineering changes, you’ll play an important role in ensuring the continued quality and performance of our products.
This is an opportunity to apply your materials and process knowledge within a highly regulated aerospace environment, working closely with internal teams, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders to find effective, technically robust solutions.
What You’ll Do
- Compile new and maintain existing Process Specifications (PSs), Martin-Baker Material Specifications (MBMSs) and Martin-Baker Fabric Descriptions (MBFDs).
- Generate and maintain materials and substances within the Materials Management Database.
- Provide technical support on materials and process-related queries from internal and external stakeholders, including customers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Support material obsolescence management and act as an advisor on hazardous materials and processes.
- Provide technical support for defect investigations, including consideration of materials, processes, and testing requirements.
- Peer review the introduction and modification of P numbers, supporting the control of standard parts, materials, substances, and source-controlled parts and assemblies.
- Provide technical input into Material Review Applications (MRAs) relating to materials and processes.
- Act as a technical resource, using scientific interpretation and engineering judgment to provide advice and support across the business.
- Support engineering change applications relating to materials and processes as a Subject Matter Expert.
- Produce clear, accurate technical documentation, reports, and presentations to communicate engineering requirements and findings.
- Plan and organise your own workload in line with agreed work packages, while identifying opportunities for continual improvement across Martin-Baker products and processes.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and business stakeholders to achieve the optimum technical solution.

What We’re Looking For
- HNC/BTEC or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, or an appropriate science-based discipline.
- General knowledge of materials science and engineering, particularly materials commonly used within the aerospace industry, including aluminium alloys, CRES, steels, copper, and copper alloys.
- Knowledge of heat treatment processes, including annealing, solution treatment, artificial ageing, and precipitation hardening.
- Understanding of heat-treatment equipment and associated testing, including hardness, tensile, and conductivity testing.
- Knowledge of finishing processes and associated considerations such as hydrogen embrittlement, wear, corrosion, dissimilar materials, and post-finishing testing.
- General knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication processes, ideally within an aerospace or similarly regulated environment. This may include adhesive bonding and sealing, lubrication, fastening, welding, brazing, and soldering.
- Good understanding of the specifications and standards applicable to materials used within aerospace, with the ability to identify suitable alternatives where materials become obsolete or unavailable.
- Experience creating and delivering technical documentation and presentations.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Familiarity with PLM systems or materials/data management systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret technical information and provide practical engineering advice.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to consult with colleagues, suppliers, customers, and other business stakeholders.
- A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to manage your own workload, take ownership, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Experience within aerospace, defence, or another highly regulated industry is desirable.
- Knowledge of US MIL-STD / UK Defence Standards is desirable.
- Understanding of textile properties, testing, manufacturing, and finishing processes is desirable.
- Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety requirements, including REACH and UK HSE requirements, is desirable.
- Experience with Teamcenter, SAP ERP, or materials management databases would be advantageous.
