What to Expect

As a Materials Laboratory Technician, you will support the running, maintenance, and strategic development of the materials engineering laboratory, as well as assist with technical tasks of sample preparation and measurement of materials. This hands-on role focuses on the development and validation of advanced materials analysis/testing techniques used across our vehicle programmes; ensuring McLaren continues to set benchmarks in performance, safety, and quality.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct mechanical, physical, and chemical testing of materials including composites, metals, and adhesives
  • Lead equipment training for materials engineers, ensuring correct protocols are followed when using the machinery, as well as cleanliness guidelines are followed.
  • Ensure safety protocols and housekeeping standards are maintained
  • Contribute to process improvements in material analysis processes and help implement new tools or methods where appropriate.
  • Assist with sample preparation and microstructural analysis.
  • Maintain test records & documentation; building capability towards supporting ISO 1`7025
  • Operate laboratory equipment; analytical instruments, microscopes, mechanical testing
  • Support failure analysis investigations, acquiring data to support materials engineering tasks on current vehicles
  • Assist with laboratory development, contribute towards strategic plans on developing materials laboratory facilities
  • Collaborate with team members, mentor early career students within the team.

What You'll Bring

Technical Competencies

  • Practical experience in a materials laboratory or testing environment
  • Knowledge of automotive testing standards
  • Previous experience in an automotive or aerospace environment
  • Proficiency with laboratory data systems and Microsoft Office
  • Keen desire to develop experiments and come up with test methods

Leadership & Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Lead training sessions for incoming staff
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills
