Role Purpose
As a Materials Technologist, you’ll provide technical and analytical support across our materials operations, helping to ensure that raw materials, recycled materials, formulations and finished products consistently meet the required quality and compliance standards.
Working closely with production teams and process engineers, you’ll plan and carry out material testing, investigate material failures and processing issues, and provide clear, accurate analysis to support decision-making. You’ll also play an important role in material trials, waste reduction and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate day-to-day quality activities within the Materials Laboratory, ensuring testing and analysis is planned, prioritised and completed to the required standards.
- Carry out accurate physical testing and analysis across raw materials, recycled materials, material formulations and finished products.
- Develop and improve test methods and quality checks to ensure consistency across material mixing and downstream manufacturing processes.
- Work closely with production teams and process engineers to support material trials, troubleshoot processing issues and ensure products meet required quality standards.
- Analyse test data, perform calculations independently and clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
- Investigate material-related failures and provide technical support for customer complaint investigations where required.
- Identify opportunities to improve material waste streams and increase the effective utilisation of reprocessed materials.
- Maintain, calibrate and ensure the appropriate upkeep of laboratory and specialist testing equipment.
- Actively contribute to continuous improvement activities, helping to improve quality, efficiency and working practices across the business.

Key Skills and Experience
We’re looking for someone who combines strong analytical skills with practical materials knowledge and a methodical approach. Ideally, you’ll have:
- Knowledge and practical experience of polymer analysis techniques, including DSC, IR and TGA.
- Experience of material and product testing within a manufacturing, laboratory or quality environment.
- The ability to analyse processes, identify opportunities for improvement and support the implementation of new working methods and systems.
- Experience reading and interpreting Certificates of Conformity and Material Data Sheets.
- A good working knowledge of quality systems, material standards and relevant testing requirements.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret data and communicate findings clearly.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to work collaboratively with production, engineering and other stakeholders.
- A proactive approach and the ability to work effectively on your own initiative.
- Good IT skills, including experience with Microsoft 365; knowledge of IFS would also be beneficial.
- A good understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental requirements within a manufacturing or laboratory environment.
