Description
About the team and what we do
The Nursing and Midwifery Council regulates nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England. Our role is to protect the public by maintaining professional standards and taking action when concerns are raised about someone’s fitness to practise.
At a time of sustained scrutiny and change across maternity services, we are strengthening how professional expertise and regulatory intelligence inform our work. We are looking for an experienced registered midwife to join us as our Maternity Regulation Liaison.
This is an opportunity to connect information from across the regulatory landscape and help turn it into learning and improvement. Acting as a bridge between Professional Practice and Professional Regulation, you will bring together external insight and internal regulatory information to support the NMC’s midwifery strategy and strengthen public protection.
Your role and impact
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Midwifery, you will provide current professional midwifery and regulatory expertise to operational teams, senior leaders, colleagues and decision-makers across the NMC.
You will lead the development of regulatory intelligence and learning across maternity services. This will involve triangulating insight from fitness to practise, adjudications, education quality assurance, revalidation, research, stakeholder feedback and the wider maternity and neonatal landscape. You will help colleagues interpret what this information means, identify risk and translate learning into improvements in education, professional practice, guidance and regulatory activity.
You will also contribute specialist midwifery input to regulatory policy, standards, guidance, communications and engagement, helping ensure that our work is professionally informed, fair, proportionate and focused on public protection.
The role will involve:
- Providing clear, balanced and evidence-informed advice on midwifery practice, professional standards, risk and public protection
- Triangulating midwifery and neonatal information across Professional Practice and Professional Regulation
- Identifying themes, emerging risks and safeguarding or public-protection concerns, and advising on appropriate action
- Translating regulatory intelligence and case learning into improvements in education, professional practice, guidance and policy
- Contributing specialist expertise to the development and review of regulatory tools, standards and communications
- Supporting consultation and engagement so that regulatory work reflects the perspectives of registrants, women, families, carers, employers, educators and system partners
- Building constructive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders across the four countries of the UK
- Working with research and professional colleagues to strengthen the evidence informing midwifery and perinatal regulation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
