Matron Position in Secondary School

We are looking to appoint a Matron, NMC registered, to work in our secondary school, reporting to the Depute Rector in charge of Pastoral Care. This is a maternity cover post for up to 12 months.

As Matron, you will play a key role in supporting the health, wellbeing and pastoral care of pupils across the Senior School. You will provide a professional and approachable nursing service, responding to day-to-day medical needs and emergencies while supporting pupils with ongoing physical and emotional health needs.

Working closely with the School’s pastoral and safeguarding teams, as well as parents, colleagues and external healthcare professionals, you will help ensure pupils receive appropriate, compassionate and confidential care. You will also contribute to health education and promotion across the School, helping to create a safe and supportive environment in which every pupil can flourish.

Main Responsibilities

Medical Care

  • Providing triage and urgent care as needed, including first aid in cases of accident or illness
  • Assessment and management of any medical complaints
  • Liaison with pupils’ parents
  • Liaison with pupils’ GP, hospital, clinic and/or A&E as necessary
  • Support and monitoring of any pupils with health needs, including the development of pupil specific care plans in agreement with parents and support agencies
  • Maintain medical records (treatment, medication given, etc) for all pupils

Support

  • Maintain a channel of communication with the teaching staff regarding the mental and physical welfare of pupils
  • Work closely with pastoral staff and the Depute in charge of pastoral care regarding child protection and Safeguarding
  • Member of the school’s Child Protection/Safeguarding Team
  • Ensure parents, guardians, house staff and teaching staff are informed of accidents, injuries, illness, safeguarding and emotional health as appropriate
  • Liaise with external agencies as appropriate (chemist, Consultant, GP, Social Services, CAMHS, etc.)
  • Ensure confidentiality, under the guidelines of the NMC and school policies, of any information regarding pupils/staff
  • Ensure awareness of, and assistance in, the implementation of any health promotion initiatives. This will also include assisting in the delivery of PSE/PHSE (personal, health and social education) curriculum and Biology health talks.
  • Advise on Health and Safety matters where appropriate, and as a member of the school’s Health and Safety Committee.
  • Teach first aid to staff and pupils where required.

Personal And Professional Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the NMC The Code: Standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives and be conversant with the Scope of professional practice and other NMC advisory papers
  • Use evidence-based practice to develop and maintain a high quality of nursing care to the pupils
  • Maintain requirements of professional revalidation of NMC and participate in the appraisal process

Administration

  • Liaise with Community Health teams (including Public Health Scotland); make necessary arrangements and supervise immunisations etc for pupils when appropriate, collect, process and provide necessary information for Community Health Services etc.
  • Ensuring all examinations, care given and medications prescribed are recorded contemporaneously and accurately
  • Maintain confidential records of all attendances and any transfers
  • Assist with co-ordinating any audit or development of protocols/policies relating to medical care
  • Assist with the ordering of stock for the medical room
  • Order and maintain medical equipment, emergency bag, oxygen and defibrillation equipment
  • Issue first aid boxes for use on school trips and at all sports grounds

Ideal Candidate

Essential

  • NMC Qualified Registered Nurse with minimum of two years’ experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for health education and promotion
  • Confidence and experience in providing triage care

Desirable

  • Urgent care, primary care or school nurse experience
  • Experience managing safeguarding issues with children
  • IT skills and knowledge of healthcare software applications
  • Experience of delivering/teaching health related sessions
