Description
OCU are recruiting for an experienced Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Construction Manager to lead the delivery of major high-voltage energy projects based in Scotland, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling including substations up to 400kV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and other critical infrastructure supporting the UK's transition to a low-carbon future.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership role, managing complex M&E construction activities from installation through to commissioning and energisation. You'll work alongside talented project teams, specialist contractors, and industry-leading clients to safely deliver projects that will help shape the nation's energy network for generations to come.

Key Responsibilities
As our M&E Construction Manager, you'll be responsible for leading and managing all Mechanical and Electrical construction activities across major energy infrastructure projects.
You'll ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme, and to the highest quality standards, while maintaining full compliance with CDM 2015, client requirements, and industry regulations.
Working closely with Project Managers, Commissioning Engineers, Designers, DNOs, OEMs, and specialist subcontractors, you'll provide the leadership and coordination needed to successfully deliver projects through to energisation and final handover.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading all Mechanical & Electrical construction activities across substations, BESS, and associated energy infrastructure projects.
- Managing site teams, subcontractors, specialist suppliers, and key project interfaces to ensure safe and efficient delivery.
- Coordinating HV and LV electrical installations, including:
- Transformers
- Switchgear
- Protection & Control Systems
- SCADA
- Cable installation
- Earthing systems
- Associated mechanical plant and equipment
- Planning works in line with programme milestones and project specifications.
- Ensuring full compliance with CDM 2015, company procedures, client standards, approved RAMS, permit-to-work systems, and quality requirements.
- Monitoring construction progress, productivity, and quality, proactively resolving technical and programme challenges.
- Leading inspections, quality assurance activities, Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), and pre-commissioning inspections.
- Coordinating commissioning and energisation activities alongside Authorised Persons (APs), Senior Authorised Persons (SAPs), Commissioning Engineers, DNOs, IDNOs, and OEMs.
- Driving an exceptional health, safety, environmental, and quality culture through visible leadership, site inspections, and toolbox talks.
- Managing construction records, inspection reports, quality documentation, red-line drawings, and project handover packs.
- Working collaboratively with project management, commercial, design, and client teams to successfully deliver project objectives.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Experience managing Mechanical & Electrical construction activities on high-voltage infrastructure or utilities projects.
- Experience delivering substations, BESS, electrical infrastructure, cable projects, or other major energy schemes.
- A qualification in Construction, Engineering, Health & Safety, or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience).
- NEBOSH, IOSH, or similar Health & Safety qualification.
- Strong knowledge of CDM 2015 and Principal Contractor responsibilities.
- Experience developing and reviewing RAMS, safe systems of work, and permit-to-work processes.
- Proven ability to manage subcontractors and specialist suppliers within fast-paced construction environments.
- Authorised Person (AP) experience or qualification (desirable).
- Strong understanding of HV/LV electrical installations, commissioning, and safe isolation procedures.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience undertaking site inspections, audits, quality assurance, and incident investigations.
- Experience working within DNO, IDNO, ICP, utilities, transmission, or renewable energy environments would be highly advantageous.
