Project Value: £100m+ with c.£25-30m M&E value
I'm currently supporting a major UK main contractor with the appointment of a Senior M&E Quantity Surveyor to take the lead on the M&E commercial delivery of a major £100m+ commercial development in Darlington.
The project is a new-build commercial office for a government department, with the M&E package valued at approximately £25m to £30m. M&E installation is due to commence in early next year, making this a key appointment as the project moves into the delivery phase.
This is a senior role with genuine responsibility. You'll take overall commercial responsibility for the M&E package across the project, working closely with the wider project team and leading a small commercial team comprising of 1-2 Assistant Quantity Surveyors and a Quantity Surveyor.
The Role
You'll have responsibility for the commercial management and delivery of the full M&E package, working alongside mechanical and electrical engineers, planners, design managers, project managers and the wider site team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Taking overall commercial responsibility for the M&E installation
- Leading and developing a small commercial team
- Managing the commercial performance of the M&E works from pre-installation through to completion.
- Working closely with M&E engineering and design teams to manage scope, change and commercial risk.
- Managing subcontractors and supply-chain relationships.
- Cost reporting, forecasting and commercial reporting.
- Managing variations, applications, valuations and final accounts.
- Identifying and managing commercial risks and opportunities.
- Working closely with planning and project management teams to understand programme and delivery impacts.
- Supporting procurement and ensuring packages are commercially robust.
- Providing commercial input into project decisions and maintaining strong cost control throughout delivery.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
