Role Opportunity: Mechanical Fitter

Contract: Full Time, Permanent Location: Porton Down, DSTL Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday (on-call rotations: 1 in 6 weeks) Salary: £41,000 – £45,000 dependent on qualifications


About the Role

Working as part of the Technical Services team under the Technical Services Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance across a range of mechanical systems.
  • Ensuring continuation of safe and reliable facility operations under the facilities management contract.
  • Complying with statutory and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Collaborating with a team of five Mechanical Fitters to perform maintenance tasks according to established schedules.
  • Conducting remedial works and fault rectification to minimise disruptions to end users.
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records via a CAFM system whilst updating compliance documentation promptly.

Key tasks involve:

  • Technical support and advice for colleagues, clients, and end users.
  • Collaborating with tradespersons and specialist subcontractors.
  • Supervising contractors, ensuring documentation, certifications, and compliance per company and client standards.

Daily activities include routine maintenance of systems like:

  • Commercial heating systems
  • Chilled water systems
  • Pressurised water systems
  • Compressed air systems
  • Mechanical air handling units
  • Local exhaust ventilation
  • Steam installations

Additionally, you’ll work with pressure systems under PSSR 2000 regulations, and support requirements for:

  • Confined spaces
  • Legionella control
  • Other regulated systems

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., Mechanical Engineering).
  • Accredited First Aid qualification required (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical building services including:
    • Heating systems
    • Ventilation
    • Pressurised water systems
    • Compressed air systems
    • Steel installations

Desirable Qualifications & Experience:

  • IOSH Working Safely certification.
  • HVAC experience/qualifications.
  • F-Gas certification.
  • Legionella awareness training.
  • Familiarity with SFG20 maintenance schedules.
  • Safe systems compliance with JSP 375 (Ministry of Defence).

Security Requirements:

  • Must hold UK Nationality.
  • Ability to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance.
