Workshop Mechanic – Fleet Maintenance
Location: Haywards Heath, West Sussex Salary: £22.22 per hour (£46,215 p/a) plus excellent benefits including:
- 25 days’ annual leave (with the option to purchase up to five additional leave days)
- Matched pension scheme
- Flexible working hours available within a 40-hour week (Monday–Friday)
About the Role
Ready to impact a better future? As a Workshop Mechanic, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining our comprehensive fleet of commercial vehicles. Your duties will include repairing, maintaining, and inspecting all vehicles under Serco in strict accordance with the Driver Vehicle and Standards Agency (DVSA) “Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness.”
This hands-on, responsibility-driven role requires expertise in inspecting faults, conducting preventive maintenance, and ensuring absolute compliance with legal and safety standards. It’s a position where your mechanical skills directly contribute to keeping our fleet safe, efficient, and operational.
Responsibilities
You’ll be entrusted to:
- Perform maintenance inspections and repairs on all vehicles presented to ensure safety and compliance.
- Identify vehicle faults and execute necessary repairs.
- In consultation with the Workshop Supervisor, plan all required safety inspections at least six months in advance, fulfilling all vehicle statutory obligations.
- Ensure all statutory brake tests are completed as required.
- Conduct test drives post-repair to validate that vehicles meet roadworthiness standards.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment.
- Record all inspections and repairs—either manually or electronically—post-completion.
- Work outside normal operating hours when required by operational demands.

Requirements
To excel in this role, we seek candidates with:
- A full industry-recognised qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (e.g., City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3).
- Proven experience in maintaining and repairing large commercial fleets.
- A valid Category C (truck) driving licence.
- Experience working on specialist hydraulic systems.
Additionally, all applicants must:
- Be eligible to work in the UK.
