Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Salary: £40,000 (Negotiable)
Location: Manchester
An established engineering business is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design fabricated and machined equipment for industrial applications. You will take projects from initial requirements through 3D design and detailed manufacturing drawings, then support the workshop during fabrication and build.
This role would suit an engineer who enjoys seeing their designs made and can turn a practical requirement into equipment that is straightforward to manufacture and assemble.
The role
- Design mechanical fabrications, machined components and complete assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Produce 3D models and detailed 2D drawings for laser cutting, folding, welding, machining, and assembly.
- Design components such as shafts, housings, couplings, and fixtures, applying appropriate tolerances and fits.
- Work with the workshop to resolve design queries and adapt designs to available materials and manufacturing methods.
- Support the reverse engineering and improvement of existing equipment.
- Consider cost, buildability, and maintenance throughout the design process.

What you’ll need
- Mechanical design experience in fabrication, special purpose machinery, or a similar manufacturing environment.
- A strong understanding of design for manufacture, including sheet metal fabrication and machined components.
- Experience producing detailed manufacturing drawings from initial requirements.
- Professional working proficiency in SolidWorks and experience with AutoCAD, DraftSight, or similar 2D CAD software.
- Knowledge of mechanical assemblies, tolerances, fits, and machining practices.
- An engineering qualification at HNC/HND level or equivalent.
- A full UK driving licence.

Experience with water or wastewater equipment, process plant, site measurements, and stainless steel or plastics design would be useful, but is not essential.
The employer is particularly interested in engineers who can discuss equipment they have designed, explain their manufacturing decisions, and show how they supported a project through build. Salary will reflect the depth of that experience.
