Mechanical Designer Opportunity in Peterborough

We are seeking a talented and motivated Mechanical Designer to join our team based in Peterborough. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced design professional to contribute to a wide variety of engineering projects across industrial and manufacturing environments.

In this role, you will be responsible for designing machine guarding, mechanical structures, process pipework systems, factory layouts, and equipment skids. Working closely with engineers, project teams, and clients, you will transform concepts into practical, compliant, and efficient design solutions while ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out site surveys of new and existing pipework systems and produce accurate supporting documentation.
  • Design and develop machine guarding solutions that are practical, robust, and compliant with relevant safety standards.
  • Produce detailed 3D models for factory layouts, process skids, and mechanical installations using AutoCAD Inventor.
  • Create accurate factory layout plans and engineering drawings.
  • Modify and update existing designs to meet current legislation, customer requirements, and operational improvements.
  • Prepare supporting technical documentation, including design calculations, drawing packages, and project records.
  • Maintain drawing control procedures and ensure all documentation is completed to company and client standards.
  • Liaise effectively with clients, project managers, engineers, and production teams throughout the design process.
  • Support machinery upgrades and improvement projects within industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Promote safe working practices and demonstrate a proactive approach to health, safety, and quality at all times.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Mechanical Engineering qualification such as BTEC, NVQ Level 3, HNC, HND, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering best practices.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Vault, and AutoCAD Inventor.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to interpret and produce detailed engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Experience revising and modifying existing designs while maintaining drawing control standards.
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to engage with clients and stakeholders at all levels.

  • Knowledge And Application Of Machinery Guarding Standards, Including
    • BS EN ISO 14120 – General Requirements for Guards
    • BS EN ISO 12100:2010 – Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction
    • BS EN ISO 13857:2008 – Safety Distances to Prevent Hazard
