Job Description/Preferred Qualifications

KLA's Global Products Group (GPG), which is responsible for creating all of KLA's metrology and inspection products, is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the team based in Newport, UK.

Purpose of the role

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who is hands on, highly motivated, and a team player. The candidate will be engaged during the entire product lifecycle, from prototype to productization, and play a decisive role in the mechanical design and qualification of future KLA products.

The engineer will support the design, building, and qualification of a wide range of KLA equipment front end modules (EFEMs) and integrated components. The candidate will be expected to provide technical solutions for new requirements and sustaining existing product portfolio and create prototypes for design verification through to production release.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for the complete mechanical design process, including requirements specification, feasibility studies, cost management, and scheduling.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams to determine design requirements, implement best design practices, and achieve functional product design solution.
  • Design mechanical components in CREO Parametric 3D - Pro/E CAD software.
  • Conduct or direct CFD and FEA analyses to optimize Semiconductor Equipment airflow requirements, and mechanical design.
  • Reduce 3D mechanical designs to 2D drawing and proper application of mechanical tolerancing/GD&T to achieve desired fit and functionality of manufactured parts.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop components and sub-system assemblies that will expedite product development timeline.
  • Work closely with suppliers to ensure parts and assemblies are built per design, and cost and schedule requirements are achieved.
  • Participate in the entire design/build cycle, including design, 3D CAD modelling, design review presentations, 2D drawing generation, procurement of prototype parts, system integration, and prototype testing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Holds a Degree level qualification in Engineering or related subject (or have equivalent level of experience).
  • Experience in design using 3D CAD software, ideally Creo.
  • Demonstrate ownership of both project level and task level work, comfortable to lead and drive mechanical design projects.
  • Candidate will ideally have experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including design principles, materials selection, and fabrication/machining methods.
  • Experience with 2D drafting and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience in several of these areas is desirable: CREO Parametric 3D MCAD - Pro/E software, CFD airflow analysis; FEA analysis; Design for manufacture (DFM); Design of welded sheet metal structures and frames; Measurement instrumentation, testing and data acquisition; Programming in Python, C/C++/C# and/or MATLAB.
