Locations: Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield (hybrid working available)
Are you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking to work on complex, high-profile projects across the public sector? Our client is expanding its Building Services team and is seeking both a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer and a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the delivery of a diverse portfolio of new-build and refurbishment schemes across the UK. These roles offer exposure to major government-funded projects within the Defence, Ministry of Justice (MoJ), Highways, Rail, and Education sectors, working alongside experienced multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative and sustainable engineering solutions.
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
As a senior member of the team, you will lead the design and delivery of building services solutions across a broad range of projects whilst supporting business growth and client development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and coordination of mechanical, electrical, and building services systems.
- Manage project delivery from feasibility through to construction.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers.
- Develop and maintain relationships with clients, contractors, and key stakeholders.
- Support business development activities and contribute to securing new opportunities.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation, standards, and industry best practice.
- Work collaboratively within BIM-led project environments.

Essential Experience
- Significant experience in Building Services Consultancy.
- Mechanical or combined M&E design background.
- Experience delivering projects within public sector environments such as:
- Defence
- Ministry of Justice (MoJ)
- Highways
- Rail
- Education
- Strong understanding of:
- Power distribution systems
- Lighting design
- Fire alarm systems
- Security and access control systems
- Standby and emergency power systems
- Sound knowledge of CDM Regulations and design risk management.
- Experience using:
- AutoCAD
- Revit
- BIM workflows and standards
- Amtech/Trimble ProDesign
- Dialux and/or Relux
Desirable
- Experience across both consultancy and public sector environments.
- Established client relationships and industry contacts.
- Chartered status or working towards professional accreditation.
Mechanical Design Engineer
This opportunity is ideal for engineers looking to further develop their career within a leading consultancy environment, gaining exposure to major public sector projects and working alongside experienced design professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and delivery of building services projects.
- Produce engineering calculations, specifications, and technical reports.
- Support the development of power, lighting, fire alarm, and building services designs.
- Contribute to BIM and coordinated design activities.
- Attend client and project meetings.
- Work across both refurbishment and new-build schemes.
Essential Experience
- Experience within Building Services Engineering, either Mechanical
- Consultancy experience preferred.
- Knowledge of building services design principles and relevant regulations.
- Exposure to one or more of the following:
- Power systems
- Lighting design
- Fire alarms
- Security systems
- Emergency or standby power systems
- Familiarity with:
- AutoCAD
- Revit
- BIM environments
- Amtech/Trimble ProDesign
- Dialux or Relux

- Progress towards professional membership or chartership.
