Overview
Our client is an innovative engineering business developing advanced clean energy technology. As they move into an exciting prototype and development phase, they are looking to appoint an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design, development and build of complex mechanical systems.
This is a hands-on contract role, ideal for an engineer who enjoys detailed design work and wants to see their designs through manufacture, assembly and testing.
The Role
Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you'll be responsible for the design and development of structural mechanical systems, taking ownership from concept through to manufacture and assembly. The role will focus on structural steelwork, welded fabrications, chassis and frame design, ensuring robust, lightweight and manufacturable engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed mechanical designs using CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX).
- Design structural steel components, chassis, frames and welded fabrications.
- Develop mechanical assemblies with a focus on structural integrity, manufacturability and performance.
- Produce high-quality CAD models, engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams to support fabrication, assembly and commissioning.
- Perform design reviews and implement Design for Manufacture (DfM) principles.
- Support prototype builds and resolve engineering issues during manufacture and assembly.
- Take ownership of designs throughout the full product development lifecycle.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer.
- Strong proficiency with CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX).
- Experience designing structural steelwork, welded fabrications, chassis or mechanical frames.
- Strong understanding of structural design principles and mechanical assemblies.
- Experience producing manufacturing drawings and fabrication documentation.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes, welding techniques and Design for Manufacture (DfM).
- Experience supporting projects through manufacture, assembly and testing.

Desirable:
- Experience with structural analysis and design optimisation.
- Knowledge of steel fabrication and welding standards.
- Experience working on large fabricated structures or heavy mechanical equipment.
- Familiarity with bolted and welded connections.
- Exposure to prototype development and low-volume manufacturing.
