Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Newmarket
Salary: Up to £65,000 DOE
About the Role
KO2's client is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering team in Newmarket, working on novel automotive robotic systems at the forefront of the safety sector. You'll work closely with one of the most experienced mechanical engineers in the field, offering genuine mentorship and rapid professional development.
What You'll Be Doing
- You'll lead the mechanical design function from concept through to manufacture, creating detailed 3D CAD models and technical drawings in SolidWorks, and running structural and finite element analysis (FEA) to validate designs against real-world stresses and environmental conditions.
- This is substantial mechanical engineering — steel construction, fabrication, welding and bolted assemblies — rather than lightweight polymer work. You'll select materials, evaluate manufacturing methods, and ensure everything you design is genuinely manufacturable on the shop floor.
- You'll also drive rework and redesign of the existing platform, targeting significant efficiency gains and cost reductions through smarter engineering, while managing change control, service bulletins, technical manuals and compliance with NATO standards.

What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, from concept through to manufacture
- Strong SolidWorks skills, with the ability to produce assemblies, components and manufacturing drawings that work on the shop floor
- Confidence applying engineering calculations, tolerancing and FEA to validate designs
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes — fabrication, machining, welding and finishing
- Sound material selection knowledge and a pragmatic, evidence-based approach to problem-solving
- Strong communication skills, and the ability to work with autonomy and professional credibility
