Mechanical Design Engineer Contractor
Location: South London, UK (Onsite)
Contract: Initial 12 months (long-term potential)
Industry: Biopharmaceutical Equipment / Life Sciences
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of a next-generation bioprocessing platform. The role sits within a global R&D team responsible for the design, development, testing, and industrialisation of innovative hardware and consumable products used within the biopharmaceutical industry. This is a hands-on position requiring a blend of mechanical design expertise, prototype development, testing, and manufacturing transfer experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for a brand-new bioprocessing product platform.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Support prototype development using rapid prototyping and 3D printing technologies.
- Develop and execute product verification and performance testing activities, including creation of test methods where required.
- Work closely with manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and global engineering teams to transfer designs into production.
- Support supplier engagement and component selection activities.
- Contribute to design reviews, problem-solving activities, and continuous product improvements.

Essential Skills & Experience
- 5+ years' experience in Mechanical Design, Product Development, or R&D Engineering.
- Strong 3D CAD experience, preferably Creo and Windchill. SolidWorks or Inventor experience will also be considered.
- Experience designing products through the full development lifecycle, from concept through to manufacturing transfer.
- Hands-on experience building and evaluating prototypes.
- Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, mechanical assemblies, and general manufacturing methods.
- Comfortable working within cross-functional global project teams.

Highly Desirable
- Biopharma, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostics, or life sciences equipment experience.
- Experience with:
- Fluid handling systems
- Pumps and pump mechanics
- Flow sensors
- Pneumatics
- Single-use/disposable consumable products
- Bioprocess equipment design
- Exposure to plastics, injection moulding, and consumable product design.
- Experience supporting product launch and scale-up activities.
