Overview
Engineer the rail of the future.
As a Mechanical & Electrical Team Leader within our Complex Projects Rail Systems team, you will lead a diverse and highly capable team of engineers, technicians and early careers professionals, delivering complex rail infrastructure projects across the UK. Working both independently and within multi-disciplinary environments, you will be responsible for leading design delivery, managing resources, supporting project performance, and ensuring technical excellence across Mechanical & Electrical (M&E/E&P) rail systems projects.
This is an exciting opportunity to influence major rail programmes, develop high-performing teams, strengthen client relationships and contribute to sustainable transport solutions that create a positive impact for communities and the wider rail industry.
Your role
- Lead and manage a team of up to 12 engineers, technicians and early careers professionals, providing coaching, mentoring and development opportunities to build capability and succession within the business.
- Drive team performance and productivity, undertaking effective resource planning and workload management across multiple projects and programmes.
- Take accountability for successful project delivery, ensuring outputs are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the highest quality standards.
- Ensure compliance with design management procedures, change control processes, technical reviews, CDM requirements, HSE standards and quality management systems.
- Deliver and oversee Mechanical & Electrical (M&E/E&P) rail systems design projects, ideally undertaking the role of Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE) where appropriate.
- Support the growth of the rail systems business by identifying opportunities within existing and future programmes and contributing to strategic market development activities.
- Develop strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and project partners, supporting business development, bid management and work-winning activities.
- Lead or contribute to tender submissions, helping secure future opportunities and strengthening our position within the rail sector.
- Act as a regional focal point for the integration and coordination of multidisciplinary design teams across AtkinsRéalis.
- Collaborate effectively with project delivery, technical and market teams to ensure successful execution of complex rail projects.

About You
- Proven experience in a leadership or senior engineering role within the rail industry, with a strong desire to further develop people management and leadership skills.
- Demonstrable experience delivering Mechanical & Electrical (M&E/E&P) rail infrastructure projects throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously while maintaining control of programme schedules, budgets and resources.
- Strong understanding of rail design governance, technical assurance, risk management and project delivery processes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across clients, project teams and business functions.
- Experience supporting bid preparation, business development and work-winning activities within a consultancy or engineering environment.
- A proactive and resilient approach, capable of inspiring confidence and motivating teams to achieve exceptional results.
- Strong attention to detail, commercial awareness and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.
- Flexible, collaborative and client-focused mindset with a passion for developing people and enhancing team performance.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration would be advantageous.
- Experience as a CRE or in a similar rail design assurance role would be highly beneficial.
