With an annual turnover exceeding £600m, we are shaping Scotland’s water infrastructure through major works—including treatment assets upgrades, network enhancements, and resilience schemes—that benefit communities across the country.
As part of Scottish Water’s Enterprise strategy, we deliver projects aligned with SR27 priorities, focusing on:

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in designing, constructing, and commissioning water and wastewater infrastructure—contributing to projects that improve efficiency, sustainability, and community well-being.
Responsibilities
Your role spans the full lifecycle of projects, ensuring mechanical systems are practical, safe, and compliant while aligning with cost, time, and quality targets:
- Design & Engineering:

- Coordinate with electrical, civil, geotechnical, and process teams to integrate designs cohesively.
- Collaboration & Problem-Solving:
- Work closely with commercial, operational, and construction teams to deliver efficient, safe, and cost-effective solutions.
- Engage proactively with clients, adopting a one-team approach to support their strategic goals.
- Quality & Compliance:
- Ensure designs adhere to framework specifications and regulatory standards.
- Oversee commissioning and handover, guaranteeing smoother project transitions.
- Site & Travel Requirements:
- Travel required to sites across Scotland; a valid driving licence is essential.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
