About The Role

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at BAE Systems, you will play a pivotal role within the Warship Technical Authority (WTA) Service Hub, part of the Asset Management team within Warship Support. Your primary responsibility will be to deliver comprehensive mechanical engineering support across naval platform systems, ensuring the integrity, safety, and operational effectiveness of complex maritime assets. You will be involved in managing design changes, conducting technical assurance activities, and overseeing material state and obsolescence management. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on high-profile naval projects, contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of state-of-the-art warships used by the UK and international navies. Your expertise will support the lifecycle management of naval platforms, ensuring compliance with industry standards and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a recognized engineering qualification such as a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Membership or accreditation with a professional institution such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or equivalent is highly desirable, with a clear pathway towards Chartered Engineer status (IEng or CEng). Candidates should demonstrate a broad knowledge of complex naval platform systems, maritime defense standards, and experience working within highly regulated industries such as aviation, oil & gas, or nuclear. Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders—including military clients, OEMs, and industry partners—are essential. Proven experience in mechanical systems design assurance, product lifecycle management, requirements compliance, or related areas will significantly strengthen your application.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
