Mechanical Engineer – Design & Commissioning

About the Opportunity
Merrick & Company seeks a Mechanical Engineer to contribute to mechanical design and Commissioning & Validation (C&V) processes within multi-disciplinary teams. This role involves moderate travel (up to 50%) for client and project engagement.

The ideal candidate will be a competent mechanical engineer/designer, contributing to Life Sciences, Nuclear, and National Security projects across programming to construction administration. Engagement in facility commissioning may also be included.

What You’ll Do

Collaborate within the mechanical design team and multi-disciplinary project teams to execute detailed design of complex mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, controls, and nuclear/biocontainment facilities.
- Detailed engineering calculations
- Development of 3D models and construction drawings
- Creation of technical specifications and reports
- Support for commissioning and validation exercises

Utilise outstanding verbal and written communication skills to engage effectively with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams.

Conduct site inspections, testing, and commissioning (UK and international travel may be required).

Maintain expert-level knowledge of design codes and standards for nuclear and biocontainment facilities in the UK/EU.

Master proficient software tools (e.g., REVIT, AutoCAD, Excel, Word).

Execute all work in compliance with Merrick’s Quality Assurance (QA) procedures.

Exercise independent judgement, initiative, and creativity in design execution.

Operate in a hybrid work environment (office, remote, onsite).
Required Qualifications

5+ years minimum (preferred: 8+ years) of experience in mechanical building design, spanning government, academic, and private sector clients—ideally in:
- HVAC
- Plumbing/Process
- Fire Protection
- Controls design
- Containment laboratories and/or biopharma (highly recommended)

Licence as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) in the UK preferred—or commitment to achieving licensure within two years of joining Merrick (requires an engineering degree from an accredited university).

Hands-on experience in:
- Planning, engineering calculations, equipment selection
- Schematic design
- Production of construction documents (drawings + specifications)
- Construction administration

Proficient in REVIT and AutoCAD.

Strong skills in report writing (e.g., tree basis of design reports, specifications, and field reports).

Passport and travel readiness (potential international travel required).

UK Citizenship required due to project constraints.

Ability to obtain or hold a Secret (SC) clearance.
Desired Qualifications
- Additional experience in laboratory design and construction.
