MECHANICAL ENGINEER - PRODUCTION MACHINERY - FMCG

Based on site in Basingstoke

Package

To £38,000 Base + Benefits

Hours

Afternoon Shift: 2pm to 10pm. Initially you will be on day shift while you learn the business and machinery then move to afternoon shift (2-10pm)

The Role

You will be responsible for planned and reactive maintenance of production machinery and site facilities. The aim is to minimise downtime and keep equipment safe, reliable and compliant. The role combines hands-on fault-finding and repair with general facilities upkeep and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on production machinery in line with maintenance schedules.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns and complete lasting repairs to minimise production downtime.
  • Diagnose faults across mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems.
  • Carry out machine setting and changeovers to support production schedules.
  • Keep accurate maintenance records and logs for all planned and reactive work.
  • Carry out general facilities maintenance, including building fabric, lighting and site equipment, plus minor installations and improvements.
  • Coordinate external contractors for specialist servicing, repairs and statutory inspections.
  • Monitor spare parts stock and liaise with suppliers to source and order parts and equipment.
  • Work to health and safety procedures, including permit-to-work and lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), and keep machinery guarding and safety devices compliant.
  • Support statutory compliance checks such as LOLER, PUWER, PAT testing and fire safety equipment.
  • Report hazards, near misses and maintenance issues promptly, and keep the workshop clean, safe and organised.
  • Support root cause analysis of recurring faults, and help install and commission new equipment.
  • Contribute ideas to reduce downtime, waste and maintenance costs, and help develop maintenance processes such as PPM schedules and parts ordering procedures.

  • A recognised engineering qualification (NVQ, City & Guilds or completed apprenticeship) in mechanical, electrical or multi-skilled maintenance engineering.
  • Proven experience as a Maintenance Technician/Engineer in a production, manufacturing or FMCG environment.
  • Strong fault-finding skills across mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience with PPM systems and maintenance record-keeping.
  • A solid understanding of health and safety requirements for maintenance work, such as LOTO and permit-to-work.
  • Able to read and work from technical drawings, wiring diagrams and equipment manuals.
  • IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent health and safety awareness is desirable.
