Mechanical Engineer – Mott MacDonald Bentley
Internal applicants are welcome.
We are a fully integrated design and build business, combining the design expertise of Mott MacDonald with the contracting experience of JN Bentley. With an annual turnover exceeding £500 million, we lead the industry, creating an ideal environment for career growth.
About the Opportunity
We’ve been named a partner on a new AMS8 framework with United Utilities, extending our relationship for at least the next five years. This partnership involves managing over £3 billion of North West England infrastructure projects—including upgrades to wastewater treatment works, reducing storm overflows, and implementing the largest spill reduction programme in the UK, protecting over 500km of rivers and bathing waters.
As a Mechanical Engineer, your role will shape critical mechanical functions across project lifecycles—from feasibility, design, construction, and commissioning—to enhance water and wastewater treatment efficiency.
Your key contributions:
- Design and optimise water/wastewater infrastructure, from outline design to construction and commissioning.
- Develop P&IDs, valve schedules, pump calculations, access planning, and pipework layouts.
- Collaborate with Electrical, Civil, Geotech, and Process teams to deliver designs on Programme, within budget, and to quality standards.
- Work closely with commerical, operational, and construction teams to ensure safe, practical, and efficient solutions.
- Foster strong client relationships, adopting a one-team collaboration approach.
Work location:
- Primarily UK-based, with travel to project sites across operational regions.
Responsibilities
- Develop mechanical designs for water/wastewater infrastructure (including P&IDs, safety access, lifting arrangements, and above-ground pipework).
- Support outlines to detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover, ensuring compliance with AMS8 framework specifications.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (Electrical, Civil, Geotech) to align designs with project objectives.
- Work with commercial and operational teams to refine solutions during design, construction, and post-handover phases.
- Manage client relationships, ensuring alignment with project goals through transparent stakeholder engagement.
- Work toward IEng or CEng registration with a relevant engineering institution.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
