WHAT TO EXPECT

Gates Dumfries is one of the UK’s long-established manufacturing sites of Gates (U.K.) Limited, headquartered in Dumfries. The company specializes in the manufacture of rubber-based industrial products. As part of Gates’ global industrial network, the Dumfries site contributes to a company employing over 400 people in the UK.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mechanical Engineer specifies, plans, and delivers the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment to improve performance, ensuring full compliance with regulatory, statutory, and Corporate HSE requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops broad knowledge and skills in a specific practice area.
  • Works on small projects or portions of larger projects.
  • Performs moderate design tasks.
  • Prepares portions of project documents.
  • Edits specifications.
  • Performs research and investigations.
  • Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional projects with few complex features.
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Assists with client, customer, or official contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignments or meetings.
  • Collaboratively uses judgment to determine adaptations in methods for nonroutine aspects of assignments.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

  • Applies general knowledge of business developed through education or past experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • None.
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or administrative staff.
  • Impacts quality of own work and the work of others on the team; works within guidelines and policies.

REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Typically requires a college or university degree in Mechanical Engineering, or have at least 2-4 years of experience in a similar engineering position, that provides exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts.
  • Demonstration of effective supervision, knowledge of steam plant, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, mechanical systems, and manufacturing equipment, including equipment design, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ability to demonstrate supplier negotiations and budgetary control experience and development and monitoring of specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.
