Role Overview
The Mechanical Field Engineer is responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical field engineering services for rotating machinery including power generators both onshore and offshore.
This role exists to ensure the safe, effective, and timely execution of field service activities on customer sites across the UK. Working within defined procedures and step-by-step operational instructions, the Mechanical Field Engineer supports the maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of rotating machines, including generators, helping customers maximize equipment reliability and performance. The position is accountable for the quality of its own work, contributing to preventive and remedial maintenance programmes while representing the business professionally in both onshore and offshore environments. Operating from a UK base, the role plays a key part in sustaining customer satisfaction and supporting the lifecycle of installed products.
Your Impact
- Deliver high-quality on-site life-extension, repair, inspection, and diagnostic services - including machining, NDT, blading, winding, and critical welding - to keep customer rotating machinery performing reliably.
- Lead safe and compliant field operations by setting the standard for EHS excellence and working closely with GE EHS and service leadership to drive a zero-injury culture.
- Install, commission, troubleshoot, and service mechanical rotating machine systems, ensuring customers receive dependable support both onshore and offshore.
- Provide clear technical direction and supervision to technicians and craft labor when required, ensuring work is completed efficiently and to GE standards.
- Build strong customer relationships by acting as a trusted technical interface, exchanging information effectively, and resolving issues using established procedures.
- Strengthen operational quality through accurate preparation of safety plans, risk assessments, method statements, inspection reports, and other essential documentation.
- Continuously expand technical expertise and maintain up-to-date knowledge of reporting systems to ensure timely, precise field data and ongoing professional development.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
