Buckland Rail / Yellow Rail is hiring
Mechanical Fitter - Somerset (Mendip)
Contractor

Yellow Rail, part of the Buckland Rail family, is looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join our team on a contractor basis, working on freight wagon modifications and maintenance in the Mendip, Somerset area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the condition of vehicles prior to work commencing
  • Carry out work on the underframe and end compartments of freight wagons (where fitted)
  • Install new mechanical and electrical equipment in accordance with engineering drawings and modification instructions
  • Cut, drill, and modify steel members and plates on railway wagons and bogies
  • Work on wheelset axle ends (full training provided)
  • Apply mechanical fastenings using the correct tools and techniques
  • Install flexible conduits and cable harnesses
  • Install brake pipework
  • Connect electrical connections and install earth bonds (electrical wiring not required)
  • Carry out brake tests (full training provided)
  • Perform system testing in line with approved procedures
  • Raise technical queries where required
  • Complete all required documentation accurately

Personal Requirements

  • Previous experience within a rolling stock or rail engineering environment is essential
  • Recognised Level 3 qualification (NVQ, City & Guilds, BTEC, HND, or equivalent)
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on your own initiative
  • Good communication skills
  • Understanding of the correct use and care of tools, equipment, and PPE
  • Willingness to travel and work at sites across the UK when required
