Job Description

Location: Port of Dundee

Job Title: Mechanical Fitter

Hours: 0800-1700 Monday - Thursday, 0800-1600 Friday + requirement to work occasional on-call over weekend as part of team roster

Compensation: £38,373 + on-call allowance + paid overtime

At Forth Ports, we keep trade, logistics, and infrastructure moving. Every day, our teams support the flow of goods, materials, and services that businesses and communities rely on, helping to power economic growth across the UK and beyond. Our people are at the core of everything we do, and their expertise, commitment, and innovation drive our success.

With our commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2032 and Net Zero by 2042, we're investing heavily in sustainable and digital technologies, including major growth in offshore wind and greener port operations. For you, this means joining a business that's evolving, ambitious, and making a real difference.

About The Role

As a Mechanical Fitter, you will be responsible for servicing, repairing and maintaining all plant equipment and mechanical systems to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations. Working under the direction of the Mechanical Supervisor and in line with the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), you will deliver a responsive and high-quality maintenance service while fully complying with all health, safety and legislative requirements. The role is primarily based at the Port of Dundee, with flexibility to support maintenance activities across other locations as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all jobs are undertaken safely, with due regard to risk assessments, permit-to-work requirements, working procedures and statutory legislation. Responsible for wearing protective clothing and notifying a Supervisor of any potential hazards
  • Take a proactive approach to maintaining all mechanical equipment and promptly report any damage or misuse to a Supervisor. Liaise with operational staff as appropriate to coordinate repairs
  • Maintain a high standard of work and productivity in line with good customer service
  • Develop a thorough working knowledge of plant equipment and associated drawings in order to repair and maintain equipment to minimise downtime
  • Demonstrate initiative, sound judgment and strong organisational skills to work independently and ensure tasks are completed accurately and safely
  • Keep management and engineering staff fully informed of timescales for completion of tasks. This is particularly essential during busy peak periods
  • Undertake any ancillary tasks as required

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a proactive and safety-focused Mechanical Fitter who is comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces and in varying weather conditions. You will be flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to travel occasionally to other Company sites and to participate in an on-call rota when required. The role involves regular work in dusty environments and exposure to grains, oils and greases, so you must be able to meet medical and PPE requirements, including face-fit testing (clean-shaven). You will have a strong commitment to safe working practices, teamwork and maintaining plant equipment to a high standard.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
