Mechanical Engineer – Facilities Management (HMP Dovegate – ST14 8XP)

Job Type: Permanent, Full Time (40 hrs p/w, Mon-Fri 08:00 – 16:30) Salary: £38,814 per annum + £160 per week on-call allowance Benefits: Excellent, including comprehensive support for progression


About the Role

Ready to impact a better future? As a Mechanical Engineer in our Facilities Management team at HMP Dovegate, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining a secure, compliant, and efficiently operating establishment.

Your expertise will ensure critical mechanical and gas systems run smoothly every day, supporting colleagues, residents, and the wider community. This is a role with genuine purpose—working in a uniquely challenging environment where high standards of safety, reliability, and care are paramount. Your contribution supports rehabilitation, wellbeing, and positive outcomes within a stable, well-maintained setting.


What You’ll Do

You’ll be entrusted with key responsibilities, including:

  • Carrying out routine mechanical engineering work, planned preventative maintenance, repairs, and testing of gas systems
  • Diagnosing faults and completing defect rectification on plant and equipment across the site
  • Installing new mechanical plant and equipment, in line with specifications and standards
  • Ensuring maintenance schedules and compliance records are up to date
  • Supporting a multi-skilled facilities management team, including escorting contractors when required
  • Working safely at all times, adhering to statutory requirements, site procedures, and local regulations

If you have the following skills and experience, we’d love to hear from you:

Requirements

  • A recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent trade-based qualification (e.g., C&G or NVQ)
  • Gas Safe registration with experience in both commercial and domestic systems (desirable but not essential)
  • Ability to work independently, manage workloads, and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, customer-focused approach
  • A flexible, proactive mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Qualified as an Authorised Person (AP), or willingness to undertake training and assessment (desirable)

Vetting & Security

An Enhanced DBS check is required, covering spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and relevant police information. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire to ensure support for role-specific needs.
