Mechanical Maintenance Plant Fitter

Location: Hafod Asphalt Plant, Abercarn, Newport

Are you an experienced, qualified Mechanical Fitter looking for your next challenge? Do you enjoy fault finding, solving problems and working within a fast-paced production environment? Would you like the opportunity to join a busy asphalt manufacturing operation where you’ll work on a wide range of heavy Plant including conveyors, motors, pumps, gearboxes and drive systems, crushers, screens and material handling equipment?

We're looking for a hands-on Mechanical Maintenance Plant Fitter with experience in heavy industrial environments who thrives on keeping production-critical equipment running safely and efficiently. This role includes planned preventative maintenance as well as breakdown repairs so you’ll utilise your welding and fabrication skills. We also offer the chance to support plant improvement projects and continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.

Hours: 40 hours per week | Monday to Friday | Overtime Available (Weekends & Nights)

What You'll Be Doing

As a Mechanical Maintenance Plant Fitter with Tarmac, you'll play a key role in maintaining the reliability and performance of the asphalt plant, ensuring production targets can be achieved safely and efficiently. You will also:

  • Carry out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance activities
  • Diagnose faults and carry out effective repairs to minimise downtime
  • Lead mechanical breakdown responses and support plant reliability improvements
  • Undertake welding and fabrication work to a good standard
  • Support and deliver small-scale engineering improvement projects
  • Work closely with contractors and suppliers on site
  • Contribute to root cause analysis and preventative maintenance activities
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records using the computerised maintenance management system
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in line with company procedures
  • Promote high standards of Health, Safety and Environmental compliance

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a motivated and proactive Mechanical Fitter who can work independently and take pride in delivering high-quality maintenance standards. Suitable candidates will have:

  • Recognised Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent experience
  • Experience gained within heavy industrial, manufacturing, quarrying, asphalt, aggregates, recycling, steel, cement or similar environments
  • Strong mechanical skills covering conveyors, motors, pumps, gearboxes, bearings and drive systems
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving capabilities
  • Experience removing and fitting bearings
  • Welding and fabrication experience
  • Ability to respond effectively to plant breakdowns and unplanned maintenance
  • Good IT skills and experience using maintenance management systems
  • Strong commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental standards
  • Flexibility to work overtime when required, including occasional weekends and night shifts
