Mechanical Technician – Hard FM Engineering Team
📍 Location
James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, TS4 3BWS
💰 Salary
£44,500 (plus shift allowance inclusive)
⏰ Schedule
Full-time, permanent (37.5 hours per week), 8-week rotation mixing day and night shifts (07:00–19:00 and 19:00–07:00)
About the Role
As a Mechanical Technician in our Hard FM Engineering Team, you’ll ensure critical hospital services remain safe and reliable—delivering uninterrupted care to patients while maintaining vital environments.
Your role is dynamic and hands-on, providing essential mechanical support across a large, complex hospital estate. Your expertise will keep systems compliant, operational, and safe for patients, staff, and visitors.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Planned preventative maintenance & reactive repairs across a broad range of mechanical plant and equipment.
- Maintaining systems such as:
- Medium-temperature hot water
- Steam plant and pipelines
- Safety devices
- Upkeeping hot and cold-water systems, including:
- Calorifiers
- Storage tanks
- Thermostatic mixing valves and related components
- Operating specialist equipment, such as:
- Medical gas systems
- Decontamination equipment
- Hydrotherapy pool systems
- Ventilation & air-handling plant
- Performing pump overhauls, equipment repairs, and system testing/balancing to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Requirements
This role is ideal for candidates with:
- A recognised Engineering Level 3 Apprenticeship or equivalent structured training (e.g., City & Guilds or BTEC).
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in mechanical building services within a similar environment.
- Strong health and safety awareness, with a professional and proactive approach.
- Excellent communication and customer-focused skills.
- Ability to thrive in high-pressure, time-sensitive situations.
Vetting & Checks:
- A Standard DBS clearance will be carried out (covers spent/unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act).
- An Occupational Health Questionnaire will be completed to ensure appropriate support for the role.
