About the role
GI Healthcare Industries Limited is developing autonomous cooking systems designed for deployment in demanding real-world environments. We are looking for an experienced hands-on Mechatronics Engineer to help take our current system from TRL 6 to TRL 7, moving it from a developed prototype into a robust, manufacturable product that can be built, tested and successfully deployed at customer locations.
What you will be doing
- Refine the existing product design for manufacture, assembly, reliability and deployment.
- Lead design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly activities.
- Develop and maintain engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications and bills of materials.
- Select appropriate materials, components and manufacturing processes.
- Perform tolerance analysis, structural calculations and FEA where required.
- Identify mechanical, thermal and electromechanical risks before manufacture.
- Work directly with manufacturers and suppliers to obtain quotations, review designs and resolve production issues.
- Support component sourcing, supplier communication and manufacturing planning.
- Oversee prototype and low-volume production builds.
- Assemble, test, troubleshoot and improve complete machines.
- Collaborate on embedded systems integration, including sensors, actuators, motors, microcontrollers and PCBs.
- Develop test procedures and document build, commissioning and maintenance processes.
- Support deployment, commissioning and testing at customer sites.
- Analyse trial results and implement improvements following deployment.
- Contribute to longer-term product industrialisation, regulatory planning and preparation for higher-volume production.

What we are looking for
- A degree in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, robotics, electronics or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Good understanding of DFM, DFA, tolerances, materials and manufacturing processes.
- Experience creating and managing bills of materials.
- Experience working directly with manufacturers, suppliers or fabrication partners.
- Strong practical problem-solving, assembly and testing skills.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership within a small, fast-moving team.
- Willingness to travel and stay at deployment locations when required.

Working arrangements
- Location: Edinburgh, primarily on-site.
- Contract: 12-month fixed-term contract.
- Travel: Travel and short stays at customer deployment locations will be required.
- Start date: As soon as possible.
This role would suit an engineer who enjoys combining detailed design work with practical building, testing and troubleshooting. You should be equally comfortable working in CAD, speaking with a manufacturer and getting hands-on with a machine during a deployment.
