I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About this employer
WH Scott Engineers was founded in Belfast in 1897 by William Hill Scott and his son, manufacturing boilers and pressure vessels. It was, from the beginning, a business built around equipment that fails dangerously if it is made or maintained badly. The modern chapter began in 2010, when a management buy-out led by, current CEO, Patrick Doyle and this kick started a deliberate, capability-led expansion through strategic acquisitions. By 2026 the WH Scott Group had grown to nine businesses, each with its own name, history and reputation. That was a sign of successful expansion, In 2026 we reviewed the entire portfolio and rationalised it into three market-facing brands. Each has a clear specialism and a clear customer. Each is backed by the scale, resources and technical support of the wider Group.
