Job Summary
We are currently looking for Medical Assessors to join our Innovative Medicines function within the Healthcare Quality and Access Group.
This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research.
The objective of the Healthcare Quality and Access portfolio is to drive quality and critically appraise benefits and risks to inform robust decisions on healthcare access including accelerated access pathways. It will do this by bringing together a fusion of our capabilities across both medicines and medical devices to enable licensing and market access, as well as ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.
The medical assessor is responsible for assessing the clinical and regulatory aspects of initial and variation marketing authorisation applications for chemical or biological medicinal products, across a range of therapeutic areas, including those involving new or complex issues in adult and paediatric patients.
The post holder contributes to the Agency's wider innovation activities and helps ensure that safe and effective medicinal products continue to become available to UK patients promptly. As fully accredited assessors, they are expected to undertake assessments independently, exercising a high degree of professional judgement, autonomy and accountability for their scientific and regulatory recommendations.
The post holder will work within their designated team and will also collaborate across the Innovative Medicines and Established Medicines Functions, using matrix working principles to evaluate applications for other product types, including established medicines, where appropriate.

Job Description
As a Medical Assessor, you'll play a key role in assessing the clinical and regulatory aspects of marketing authorisation applications across a range of therapeutic areas, helping to ensure safe and effective medicines reach UK patients promptly. You'll work independently and exercise a high degree of professional judgement, while also collaborating across teams and contributing to the Agency's wider innovation activities. This is a role with genuine autonomy and impact, backed by clear career development and progression opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently assess clinical and paediatric data within initial and variation marketing authorisation applications, including complex cases, making decisions that protect public health
- Provide timely, expert scientific and regulatory advice to companies, supporting innovation without compromising the evidence base
- Prepare and present scientific assessments to expert advisory groups, such as the Commission on Human Medicines
- Build effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, contributing to assessment policy and regulatory collaboration
Person Specification
Current, hands-on experience as a medical assessor, with a track record of assessing initial and variation marketing authorisation applications and making sound, independent decisions within regulatory timelines
Strong working knowledge of regulatory processes, including case management systems, databases and the tools used in medicines assessment

A medical degree, relevant postgraduate qualification in your specialist area, and full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Proven ability to manage a high-throughput, varied workload and consistently meet demanding deadlines without compromising quality
Strong communication skills, with sound judgement under pressure and the ability to build trust with colleagues and stakeholders
Licences

Benefits
Alongside your salary of £81,000, Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency contributes £23,465 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides (opens in a new window).
- Annual Leave: 25 days annual leave on entry, rising by one day for each completed year of service to a maximum of 30 days and pro-rata for part-time staff. PLUS 8 bank holidays

- Hours of Work: 37 hours (net) per week for full time staff in all geographical locations, including London and pro rata for part-time staff

What will the process look like?
Pre-sift Stage
An initial sift will be conducted on the experience question which has a word limit of 300 words. If you are assessed as not meeting the required level, you will not be progressed past this stage.

Sift Stage
Those applications which are successful at pre-sift stage will then progress to the main sift, where we'll read and score the rest of your application. This may involve a large number of applications, please bear with us as this can take some time.

The panel will look at your application and are looking for evidence of the stated points. We may raise the benchmark score required if we receive a high number of applications.
Main Panel Interview
Successful candidates from the sift stage will be invited to attend an interview. We use a blended interview technique, allowing us to find out more about you. We use the Success Profile framework and at interview we will be assessing Behaviours and Experience.
