Flying Doctor - Remote & Rural Medicine, Western Australia
Swap the NHS for the Australian Outback
Full-time residential opportunity, minimum two-year commitment
Full visa sponsorship, with a supported pathway to permanent residency after two years of service
Full relocation package: flights, fully subsidised housing, utilities and a maintained vehicle
Aeromedical or road retrieval experience desirable but not essential, with a comprehensive three-week orientation program provided
Based mainly at Port Hedland or Kalgoorlie, with placement at our other regional bases possible depending on operational need
About the team
If you've pictured trading UK winters and NHS pressures for autonomous critical care work in one of the world's most striking remote regions, this is that opportunity. The RFDS WA Medical team delivers critical care, aeromedical retrieval, telehealth and primary health services across one of the largest and most remote health jurisdictions on earth. Working alongside RFDS doctors, nurses, pilots, coordination centre teams, regional hospitals, remote clinics and community health partners, you'll find a level of clinical autonomy and variety that's increasingly hard to come by in the NHS.
Relocating from the UK is a big step, so we've built this role to make it straightforward. RFDS WA sponsors your visa, covers your relocation and supports your transition toward Australian permanent residency after two years of service.
About the role
- Provide routine and emergency medical advice, telehealth support and clinical coordination for patients, clinicians and remote communities
- Undertake aeromedical retrieval flights as part of a medical retrieval team, supporting critically ill and injured patients across WA
- Participate in continuing medical education, clinical governance and quality improvement activities

About you
- MBBS/MBChB or equivalent, with GMC registration and experience within the NHS or another comparable Western health system
- Registered, or eligible for registration, with AHPRA as a Medical Practitioner
- Broad postgraduate clinical experience, ideally across emergency medicine, anaesthetics, ICU, acute paediatrics or rural generalist practice
- Confident independently managing critically ill and injured patients, including procedural skills relevant to critical care medicine
- Aeromedical or road retrieval experience is a plus but not essential – strong communication, teamwork and clinical judgement in complex and remote environments matter just as much
- Committed to relocating and living at a regional WA base for a minimum of two years, with flexibility on which base you're placed at based on operational need
Relocation and visa support
- Visa sponsorship for eligible employees, with RFDS WA covering associated costs

- Provided under RFDS WA's Relocation Assistance Policy, which includes a minimum two-year service commitment

- Annual professional development allowance of $34,715 and study leave provisions
- Salary packaging options available, including up to $15,900 per annum for everyday expenses and up to $2,650 per annum for meals and entertainment
