The National Heart Clinic is an independent cardiology clinic providing consultant led care at Harley Street and Richmond. We support patients with timely cardiovascular assessment and a professional, patient centred experience delivered by an experienced clinical team.
About the Role
The Medical Laboratory Technician supports the safe, accurate, and efficient handling of patient specimens and the delivery of authorised point of care testing services. The post holder maintains reliable records, equipment, stock, and quality processes while contributing to clinical governance and excellent patient care at Richmond.
Role Details

- Reports to: Head of Clinical Development and Training
- Salary: £28,000 to £30,000 per annum, depending on experience
- Contract: Permanent
- Hours: 39 hours per week, full time
- Working pattern: Service rota from Monday to Saturday
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Handling and Testing
- Receive, identify, label, prepare, process, store, and dispose of clinical specimens according to approved procedures
- Perform authorised point of care tests within the defined scope of the role
- Record results accurately and escalate unexpected, invalid, or critical findings through the approved route
- Maintain specimen integrity, traceability, confidentiality, and accurate identification at every stage
Quality, Equipment, and Safety
- Complete routine internal quality control activities and support external quality processes where applicable
- Carry out daily checks, cleaning, maintenance, and documentation for laboratory and point of care equipment
- Report equipment faults, quality concerns, incidents, and near misses promptly
- Follow infection prevention, health and safety, waste, and clinical governance procedures

Stock, Systems, and Records
- Monitor stock and reagents, including expiry dates, storage conditions, and minimum levels
- Maintain accurate paper and electronic records in the approved systems
- Support ordering, receipt, rotation, and secure storage of laboratory supplies
- Protect patient information and follow approved confidentiality and information governance requirements
Teamwork and Service Development
- Work collaboratively with consultants, nurses, administrative colleagues, and other members of the clinic team
- Communicate clearly and courteously with patients and colleagues
- Take part in induction, training, audit, and service improvement activity relevant to the role
- Provide occasional cross site support where agreed and operationally required
What We Are Looking For
Essential
- Relevant qualification in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Laboratory Technology, or a related discipline
- At least one to two years of relevant laboratory experience, including handling blood specimens and other clinical samples
- Understanding of safe specimen handling, accurate documentation, quality control, equipment checks, and stock control
- Competent use of common digital systems and the ability to learn clinic specific software
- Clear written and verbal communication with a professional and patient focused approach
- Excellent attention to detail, reliability, organisation, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Ability to work the agreed rota and respond appropriately to changing service priorities
Desirable
- Relevant additional training in point of care testing, quality, or phlebotomy
- Experience in private healthcare, cardiology, or another regulated clinical environment
- Experience using laboratory information management systems and point of care devices
- Experience maintaining electronic laboratory or clinical records
- Experience communicating with multidisciplinary clinical teams
- Evidence of contributing to audit, improvement, or training activity
- Ability to provide occasional cross site support

Working Arrangements
The role is based primarily at Richmond. Hours will be scheduled on a service rota from Monday to Saturday. The post holder may occasionally be asked to support another clinic site by prior agreement and in line with service need.
The role includes periods of standing, careful handling of clinical specimens, use of laboratory equipment, and routine manual handling within approved procedures. Reasonable adjustments will be considered to support an individual in meeting the essential requirements of the role.
