We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated Consultant Medical Oncologist to join an established, comprehensive Oncology service in the East Midlands.
The successful candidate will join a large team of Consultant Oncologists providing high-quality cancer care across a broad range of tumour sites.
We are particularly interested in candidates with specialist interests in Breast and Gynaecological Oncology, although applications from Consultants with interests in these or other tumour sites are welcomed. The service recognises the importance of flexibility and is open to discussions around individual specialist interests and job plan arrangements.
The post is offered on a substantive basis, with both full-time and less-than-full-time working arrangements considered. Job sharing applications are also welcomed.
The Role
The successful Consultant will provide a comprehensive Medical Oncology service, working collaboratively with Consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Providing specialist Oncology care for patients across the service.
- Conducting new patient, chemotherapy and follow-up clinics.
- Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Providing acute Oncology and ward-round cover.
- Participating in the emergency Oncology on-call rota.
- Providing emergency cover and reciprocal cover for Consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave.
- Continuing responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of patients under your supervision.
- Working collaboratively with other specialities through joint clinics where appropriate.
- Contributing to the supervision and training of doctors in training.
- Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Taking part in clinical audit, clinical governance, quality improvement and risk management.
- Maintaining continuing professional development and evidence-based clinical practice.
- Contributing to research and clinical trials where appropriate.

However, the department is open to discussions around other tumour site interests, recognising the importance of flexibility within the Consultant team.
The existing Oncology team covers a wide range of tumour sites, including breast, gynaecology, colorectal, urology, lung, head and neck, brain, skin, thyroid, lymphoma, HPB, upper GI, sarcoma and germ cell tumours.
The job plan can accommodate the development and consolidation of subspecialty interests, with appropriate time within Supporting Professional Activities to develop the service and individual areas of expertise.

Dedicated chemotherapy facilities and a comprehensive multidisciplinary infrastructure support the Oncology service.

- Modern radiotherapy technology and treatment-planning systems.
Research & Clinical Trials
Excellent opportunities are available for Consultants interested in research, clinical trials, and academic Oncology.
The Cancer service currently has 52 NIHR Portfolio studies open to recruitment, alongside more than 50 studies in long-term follow-up, with studies covering most tumour sites. Research activity is particularly strong in areas including breast cancer, urological cancers, palliative care and haematology.
The service also has experience with immunotherapy trials and works closely with academic and clinical research partners.
Candidates interested in incorporating research into their job plan are welcomed, with the department supporting research activity according to individual subspecialty interests.

The successful Consultant will be expected to contribute actively to:
- Undergraduate medical education.
- Postgraduate teaching.
- Teaching and supervision of resident doctors.
- Training of Speciality Registrars.
- Teaching of ACPs and other healthcare professionals.
- MDT-based learning and professional development.
The department has a significant training infrastructure, including 15 Speciality Registrars and 8 Speciality Doctors, alongside Foundation and other trainee doctors.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:
- MRCP or equivalent.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Evidence of entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or
- CCT in Medical Oncology, or be within 6 months of attaining CCT at the time of interview, or
- Evidence that the GMC is processing their Specialist Registration application, which must be provided before interview.
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in Medical Oncology.
- Up-to-date knowledge of current Oncology treatments.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care.
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinion.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience of and commitment to clinical audit.
- Experience of research.
- Experience of teaching and supporting doctors in training and/or medical students.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to continuing professional development, clinical governance and evidence-based practice.
Desirable
- Additional higher medical or scientific degree.
- Experience of clinical responsibility above SpR level.
- Peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience presenting at national or international conferences.
- Experience of Brachytherapy.
- Experience supervising audit and research.
- Experience developing Oncology services and protocols/guidelines.
- Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at the local, regional or national level.
