MMR is a well-funded company with long-term investors and a strong financial foundation. Our talented hardware and software team has successfully developed a fully functional prototype of our medical robotic platform, which has already undergone successful animal trials. With the prototype validated, we are now entering the next phase: maturing the architecture for production and scaling, ensuring safety, reliability, manufacturability, and regulatory readiness as we prepare to bring our technology to hospitals worldwide.
About the Role
We are looking for a Medical Robotics Software Manager to lead the software team responsible for our robotic platform as it transitions from prototype to regulated medical device. This role combines software engineering leadership, team management, and structured delivery in a safety-critical, clinically oriented environment.
You will manage and grow a multidisciplinary group of software engineers, oversee the planning and execution of software work across controls, imaging, UI, and integration, and ensure alignment with system requirements, verification activities, and regulatory milestones. You will turn complex product and clinical needs into clear software plans, guiding the team to deliver safe, reliable, and clinically usable functionality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the medical robotics software team, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
- Own the software delivery roadmap, defining plans, milestones, and resourcing aligned with product and regulatory objectives.
- Establish and run the operating model for software development (sprints, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives), ensuring consistent execution.
- Translate system and subsystem requirements into structured software work packages with clear ownership and acceptance criteria.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with hardware, systems engineering, AI/ML, and Verification & Validation to ensure coherent system behaviour.
- Oversee software architecture and integration across controls, imaging, robotics, and user interfaces, balancing robustness with iteration speed.
- Ensure software is designed and implemented with testability, traceability, and compliance to relevant medical device standards.
- Develop and improve engineering infrastructure including CI/CD pipelines, branching strategies, release management, and automated testing.
- Monitor progress, risks, and dependencies, and implement mitigation plans to maintain predictable and transparent delivery.
- Communicate clearly with senior leadership on status, risks, trade-offs, and team needs to inform product and regulatory decisions.

Who We Are Looking For
- Degree in Software Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related engineering field.
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant experience leading teams or managing engineering groups.
- Proven track record delivering complex software systems in robotics, automation, or other multidomain technical products.
- Strong understanding of robotics and medical device software concepts such as real-time control, sensor integration, safety behaviours, and clinical workflows.
- Experience building and evolving software teams, including defining standards, processes, and engineering culture.
- Comfortable operating with both technical depth and management responsibility, supporting detailed technical discussions and higher-level planning.
- Experience with Agile or hybrid methodologies adapted for safety-critical or regulated environments.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to align engineers, clinicians, and business stakeholders.

- Experience developing medical device software under IEC 62304 or similar safety-critical standards.
- Familiarity with robotic-assisted intervention systems, imaging workflows, or catheterization lab environments.
- Hands-on experience with languages and tools common in robotics and medical software (e.g. C++, Python, ROS or equivalent frameworks, real-time systems).
- Experience implementing CI/CD, automated testing, and software quality metrics in multidisciplinary teams.
- Exposure to regulatory pathways (FDA, CE/UKCA) and design control processes for software-intensive medical devices.
- Experience in fast-paced startup environments, comfortable with evolving priorities and broad ownership.
