Description
Torbay Council's Medical Tuition Service (MTS), part of the Vulnerable Pupils Department, is seeking an inspirational and adaptable Maths Teacher to join our dedicated team. This is a unique opportunity to work with young people who are unable to attend school due to medical, physical, or mental health needs.
About the Role
You may teach students in Torbay Hospital, in schools, online, in community settings or in the student’s home. You will deliver high-quality personalised maths programmes, monitor progress, and work closely with families, schools and healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging Maths lessons across KS3 and KS4.
- Create personalised learning programmes.
- Support pupils with medical and mental health needs.
- Build positive relationships with pupils and families.
- Work collaboratively with schools and external agencies.
- Contribute to reviews and reports.
We Are Looking For
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Strong Maths subject knowledge, a working knowledge of the curriculums for English and Science.
- Commitment to inclusion and vulnerable learners.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Flexibility, resilience and adaptability.

This post will be carrying out Regulated Activity. As such the post will require an Enhanced Criminal Record Check plus an additional Barred List Check. The check will reveal any spent and unspent convictions and adult cautions (which have not been filtered), any local Police information and a check of either the Adult, Child or Adult and Child Barred Lists.

Skills
Essential:
- Ability to teach a range of subjects especially English, Science and Maths curriculum in all key stages but especially KS3 and KS4.
- Understanding of the needs of pupils with SEND and effective delivery to meet these needs (including those pupils with a variety of medical conditions).
- The ability to motivate and interest disengaged learners and those with emotional health/medical conditions, setting high expectations of progress and achievement.
- ICT literate.
- A calm, confident and consistent style of working with young people.
- This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
Knowledge
Essential:
- Full knowledge of the English, Maths and Science curriculums.
- Thorough knowledge of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Thorough knowledge of and commitment to inclusion in education.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
- Successfully completed statutory induction for early career stage teachers.
- Classroom teaching experience in a school setting.
- Qualified Teacher Status.
- Evidence of professional development.
