I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will be using your strong technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects, from initial concepts through to final delivery. Throughout the year, you are likely to work on a range of projects and an interest in biomedical engineering will be key. There will be opportunities to take part in activities such as concept generation, rapid prototyping, and preparation of technical reports and other high-quality documentation. By working alongside our experienced project staff, you will learn how to perform analysis of engineering designs, how to design and develop test rigs, and how to design and execute experimental test programmes.
We also typically run a range of development projects staffed by teams of interns, in which you are tasked with developing a selected project proposal as far as possible in 6 months. This will give you the invaluable opportunity to drive the direction of the project, experience key project milestones, and present your finished work to the company.
