My Trauma Is Chronic, But I Am Iconic!!™ C.I.C. (MTICBIAI) is a Community Interest Company dedicated to supporting people who have experienced trauma and adversity. The organization specializes in working with care-experienced young people and adults, as well as individuals who have navigated the criminal justice system, providing compassionate, trauma-informed guidance. MTICBIAI delivers tailored, holistic interventions that include mentoring, its flagship Thrive programme, access to essentials, psychological resources, and therapeutic support. The team also provides consultancy and training to organizations, helping systems better respond to the needs of marginalized communities. MTICBIAI’s work creates measurable social value by improving wellbeing, resilience, and opportunities while reducing social costs through sustainable personal and social transformation.
Role Description
The Mentor role is a voluntary position focused on providing consistent, trauma-informed support to individuals participating in MTICBIAI's Thrive programme. Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Building trusted relationships with participants
- Offering one-to-one and small group support during programme sessions and social opportunities
- Encouraging engagement throughout the programme

Mentors work alongside Workshop Facilitators to support participants rather than delivering or facilitating workshops themselves. They provide:
- Practical and emotional support
- Help participants overcome barriers to engagement
- Encourage them to work towards realistic personal, educational, and employment goals
Mentors also:
- Signpost participants to relevant services and resources where appropriate
- Liaise with the wider MTICBIAI team to ensure coordinated support
Time Commitment
We ask Mentors to commit to 4–7 hours per week for the duration of our 12-week Thrive programme. We recognize that people have other commitments, so hours will be agreed in advance where possible. Consistent attendance is important to help build trusting relationships with participants. All training is provided and reasonable travel expenses for in-person activities will be reimbursed.
Qualifications
- The ability to build trusting, respectful, and non-judgemental relationships with young people using active listening, empathy, and trauma-informed communication.
- Experience supporting, mentoring, volunteering with, or working alongside care and justice experienced young people or other marginalized communities.
- The confidence to encourage and motivate participants while supporting them to engage in workshops, social opportunities, and one-to-one mentoring.
- An understanding of safeguarding, professional boundaries, and confidentiality, with the ability to recognize and respond appropriately to concerns.
- Good organizational and time management skills, including the ability to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with the wider team.
- Confidence using digital tools such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Microsoft Office, with a willingness to learn new systems where required.
- Resilience, self-awareness, and a commitment to reflective practice, supervision, and ongoing learning.
- A commitment to MTICBIAI's trauma-informed, lived-experience-led values and an understanding of the barriers faced by care and justice experienced young people.

Desirable
- Experience in mentoring, youth work, peer support, community development, or a related field.
- Relevant training or qualifications in youth work, social care, psychology, counselling, education, or community development, although these are not essential.
- Lived experience of care, the criminal justice system, or trauma, with the ability to use those experiences appropriately, maintain professional boundaries, and inspire hope in others.
