Must-Have Skills for People Managers in 2024 and Beyond
By Chelsea Williams
Communication: The Backbone Of Leadership
A manager’s job is to communicate routinely with team members so they never have to make assumptions about their responsibilities or goals. This means being clear, transparent, and consistent. A good start is outlining your organization’s current status and future trajectory, strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Then routinely update your team on changes to these core topics.
- Share your own communication style and take time to learn how your team members want to communicate with you.
- Clarify the purpose of each medium, creating a roadmap for your team to navigate.
- Consider the personal comfort levels of your team members, and guide them through emergency communication protocols.
- Address the personal side of work life by offering clear guidelines for when the realities of life happen.
- Empower your team with the understanding of how to voice concerns and navigate challenges effectively.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Listening: The Foundation For Trust And Connection
Our lives are moving faster than ever before. It’s easy to get wrapped up in projects and deadlines and forget to slow down and take time to listen to your team. In managerial responsibilities, the ability to pause, listen, and seek understanding is a skill that can elevate leadership effectiveness in 2024.
- Listening goes beyond understanding employees’ work-related challenges; it’s about getting to know them as whole people.
- Connect with them as humans with challenges, opportunities, joy, excitement, and fear.
- Take the time to connect personally by asking questions about what matters most to them and their families.
- Frequently, a simple check-in call can be your most powerful tool by providing a safe space for your team members to share.
Inspiration: Fueling Teams Toward A Greater Purpose
Inspiration is the secret ingredient that turns a team into a collective force that works together toward a common goal. In the current workplace, every employee—from seasoned professionals to emerging talents—consistently says they seek inspiration from their leaders. They want to be connected to people and organizations that are doing good, making a difference, and shedding light on disparity and inequality.

- In the face of change, inspiration motivates people to wake up excited and feel part of something bigger than themselves.
- You need to become an architect of inspiration within your teams by defining and embodying what it looks like.
- Leaders can inspire by sharing the company vision and bold moves to meet it through the gifts of the team.
- Model the behaviors you desire your team to have.
- For example, my team knows that I take a walk at 5:30 p.m. to end each work day, move my body, and settle my mind.
- I also share photos of hobbies and events I attend to connect with my team on a personal level.
- This is how I model wellness and encourage team members to take care of themselves.
