Our client is a leading organisation delivering major infrastructure and transportation projects across the UK. Due to continued growth and a significant project pipeline, they are seeking an MEP Assistant Design Engineer to support the delivery of complex rail and civil engineering schemes.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to develop their experience within a multidisciplinary design environment, working alongside experienced design, construction, and stakeholder teams on large-scale infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
As an MEP Assistant Design Engineer, you will:

- Assist the design team with design development activities, including the review of drawings, specifications, technical submissions, and design documentation.
- Participate in coordination meetings and monitor the progression of actions through to completion.
- Liaise with consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams to resolve technical and design-related issues.
- Support the management and coordination of design activities across rail infrastructure and track-related systems during both design and construction phases.
- Monitor progress against programme requirements and provide regular updates to project leadership.
- Ensure designs and installations comply with statutory requirements, industry standards, client specifications, and relevant regulations.
- Assist with the delivery of design assurance processes throughout design, construction, testing, and handover stages.
- Coordinate inputs from designers and supply chain partners to achieve safe, efficient, and compliant project solutions.
- Work closely with design leads, construction teams, commercial teams, planners, and key stakeholders to manage project interfaces.
- Attend and contribute to project meetings with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
- Support the identification and management of design risks, opportunities, changes, and value engineering initiatives.
- Provide technical support during construction and assist with the resolution of design-related issues.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
