Merchant Sales Manager
This role is primarily based in Northern Ireland, with regular travel throughout Northern Ireland and selected areas of the Republic of Ireland.
FP McCann is seeking a commercially driven and relationship-focused Merchant Sales Manager to grow sales through our established builders’ merchant network. The successful candidate will promote and sell our range of lintels, cills, bagged products, paving, precast fencing and flooring products.
This field-based role is suited to an individual who builds trusted customer relationships, identifies new commercial opportunities and converts enquiries into profitable orders. The successful candidate will manage a designated portfolio of builders’ merchants across Northern Ireland and parts of the Republic of Ireland, working closely with internal sales, customer service, estimating, operations and technical colleagues.
Main Areas of Responsibility
- Account Management – Develop relationships with builders’ merchant customers, including branch managers, buyers, counter staff and key decision-makers. Maintain a structured customer-visit programme.
- Sales Growth – Achieve agreed sales, margin, volume and activity targets. Increase product range, branch penetration, promotional activity and market share within each account.
- Product Promotion – Present product features and commercial benefits. Support branch days, product launches, trade events, demonstrations and local promotions.
- Quotations & Orders – Prepare accurate quotations, follow up open opportunities, negotiate within agreed parameters and convert enquiries into confirmed orders.
- CRM & Reporting – Keep CRM records current, including contacts, customer visits, quotations, sales opportunities, pipeline activity and competitor intelligence. Provide accurate forecasts and sales reports.
- Internal Co-ordination – Work with internal sales and operational teams to manage quotations, orders, deliveries and customer issues promptly and professionally.
- Market Insight – Monitor local market activity, pricing, competitor propositions and customer needs, sharing relevant insight with sales leadership.
- Compliance – Work within agreed pricing, credit, health and safety, driving and company procedures at all times.

Essential Criteria
- Field sales, account management or business development experience within builders’ merchants, construction products, building materials, or a related sector.
- A proven record of achieving sales and margin targets and growing profitable accounts.
- Strong relationship-building, communication, planning, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- Experience producing quotations, following up opportunities and converting orders.
- Confident use of CRM systems, Microsoft Office and sales-reporting tools.
- A full, valid driving licence and willingness to travel extensively within the territory.
Desirable Criteria
- Existing relationships with builders’ merchants in Northern Ireland and/or the Republic of Ireland.
- Experience selling lintels, cills, bagged products, paving, precast fencing or flooring products.
- Product knowledge within the construction-materials sector.
- Experience delivering branch training, product demonstrations or trade-counter promotions.
- Familiarity with a CRM platform (both desktop and mobile versions and effective use.
- Relevant sales, construction or business qualification.
