About Our Group

Worldwide data creation will grow to an enormous 183 zettabytes by 2026, or ten times the amount of data produced globally in 2017. Seagate is a global leader in data storage solutions. We strive to create precision-engineered data storage technologies that deliver superior capacity, speed, security and performance. Our Springtown site is Londonderry’s largest manufacturer, with more than 1,700 employees across research and development, manufacturing and supporting functions. We are seeking a talented and motivated Metrology Magnetics Specialist to join our growing team and help develop the next generation of data storage technology.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer or scientist who is passionate about magnetic recording technology, advanced measurement systems, data analysis and innovation.

Springtown provides a range of activities that support work-life balance. This may include joining our vibrant Creative Network with it’s choir, Thai and Chinese language classes, and cookery class. Help stay fit with either an individual or group exercise class with a personal training instructor in the on-site gym. Network with your colleagues through our Young Professionals Network or the Women’s Leadership Group.

About The Role - You Will

As a Metrology Magnetics Specialist, you will be responsible for supporting and developing magnetic measurement capability across both manufacturing and new product development activities.

Working closely with Process Engineering, Product Engineering, Design, Manufacturing, and Research & Development teams, you will provide technical expertise in magnetic characterization and measurement methods used to evaluate recording head and media performance.

The role combines advanced metrology, statistical analysis, process support, and new technology development. You will play a key role in understanding magnetic performance, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing new measurement techniques required for future recording technologies. You will receive extensive training in key aspects of wafer processing, including vacuum technology, photolithography, electroplating, and a wide range of metrology technologies. This will also include manufacturing systems and state-of-the-art process controls.

You will do

  • Provide technical leadership in the characterization and understanding of magnetic materials, correlating material properties, process conditions and measurement data with HDD recording performance, reliability and manufacturing outcomes.
  • Provide technical ownership and support for magnetic measurement systems used in HDD product development and manufacturing.
  • Analyze magnetic performance data and communicate actionable insights to process, product and manufacturing teams.
  • Establish and maintain global standards, best practices and documentation for magnetic measurement techniques and data analysis methodologies.
  • Define measurement uncertainty, calibration methodologies and error budgets to ensure confidence in magnetic measurements while supporting product and process failure investigations through data-driven root cause analysis.
  • Investigate measurement-related issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Support process development teams through data-driven analysis of magnetic performance trends and process interactions.
  • Support product and process failure investigations through detailed magnetic characterization and data-driven root cause analysis.
  • Develop next-generation metrology solutions to support future product and technology requirements.
  • Collaborate with global R&D and engineering teams to qualify new measurement techniques and technologies.
  • Ensure measurement systems meet capability requirements through statistical analysis, correlation studies and Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on measurement accuracy, automation, throughput and data quality.
  • Partner with equipment suppliers and internal stakeholders to evaluate, qualify and deploy new tools and technologies.
  • Support manufacturing operations through timely analysis and interpretation of critical magnetic performance measurements.
  • Contribute to technology transfer activities between research, development and manufacturing environments.
  • Evaluating new materials for enhanced process performance or cost improvement and working with vendors for new tool qualifications.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
