Main purpose of the role

The role of Assistant Laboratory Scientist is focused on supporting the department in striving for customer service excellence in internal and external activities.

They should provide support the team in ensuring that all initiatives are fully implemented, and that role model/ambassador behaviour, values and beliefs are adopted across the department.

An Assistant Laboratory Scientist should be able to work well with minimal supervision, whilst also working effectively as a key team member to maximise the overall service delivered. A flexible ‘can do’ approach is essential for this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample reception.
  • Preparation of microbiology samples including routine culture and antibiotic sensitivity testing, urinalysis and parasitology.
  • Use of Microbiology analysers including troubleshooting.
  • Use of the Matrix LIMS system and data entry.
  • Maintenance and correct use of laboratory Equipment.
  • Preparation of reagents/media.
  • General laboratory housekeeping.
  • Reception and ordering of stock and reagents.
  • Testing of EQA and EQA scheme submission under supervision.
  • Environmental/temperature monitoring.
  • Adherence to written Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Controls, and Health & Safety rules.
  • Identify own development needs.
  • Responsible for delivering their assigned areas of work, liaising with the Section Head and colleagues as necessary.
  • Ensures that internal and external quality control requirements are met.
  • Works flexibly and collaboratively.
  • Adopts role model behaviour, values and beliefs.
