Microsoft Fabric Architect
Southwark Council | Contract | Inside IR35 | £650/day (Umbrella) | Start: 12th October
Southwark Council is seeking an experienced Microsoft Fabric Architect to provide strategic and technical leadership over its enterprise data and analytics platform. This is a senior architecture and governance role — not a data engineering or report-building position — for someone who can bring order, scalability and best practice to a growing Fabric estate.
The Role
Working closely with the Council's Data and Platforms Team, you'll review, validate and enhance the Microsoft Fabric architecture, governance framework and operating model, ensuring the platform stays secure, cost-effective and aligned to Microsoft best practice as it scales.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Leading review and technical assurance of the Fabric architecture, including OneLake, Lakehouses, Warehouses, pipelines, dataflows, semantic models and Power BI
- Strengthening the Bronze/Silver/Gold Medallion architecture and reusable data product design
- Reviewing and enhancing governance across Azure and Fabric — RBAC, tagging, workspace lifecycle, environment separation and cost management
- Defining security boundaries, access models, service principals and governed connections
- Ensuring alignment with UK GDPR, DPIA and public sector information governance requirements
- Enhancing integration with Microsoft Purview (catalogue, lineage, classification)
- Reviewing capacity, performance and chargeback models
- Producing architecture diagrams, decision records, roadmaps and standards for technical and senior stakeholders
- Mentoring and providing design assurance to engineers, analysts and platform administrators

What We're Looking For
- Proven experience designing and reviewing enterprise-scale Microsoft Fabric solutions
- Strong knowledge of OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse, notebooks, pipelines, dataflows, semantic models and Power BI
- Experience with Medallion architecture, data product design and governance frameworks
- Strong grounding in security, identity and compliance within Microsoft cloud environments
- Experience with Azure data platform services, resource groups, subscriptions and RBAC
- Excellent stakeholder management and the ability to communicate complex architecture clearly to non-technical audiences

Desirable:
- Microsoft Purview experience; public sector/local government background; Azure Synapse/Data Factory migration experience; Fabric capacity management and FinOps; AI/Copilot within governed environments; Power Platform/Dataverse integration.
Contract Details
- Rate: £650 per day via umbrella company
- IR35 Status: Inside IR35
- Start Date: 12th October
- Location: Southwark Council (Resources – Technology and Digital Services, Data and Platforms Team)
