Mixed Tax Senior Manager
Cardiff | £72,000-£85,000
If your tax career has developed across both companies and their owners, rather than disappearing down one increasingly narrow specialism, this role should make considerably more sense.
A high-performing independent accountancy firm is expanding its tax team following continued growth and investment. Its clients are predominantly entrepreneurial businesses and private individuals, with advisers regularly working across both the commercial and personal sides of a client's affairs.
The Mixed Tax Senior Manager will work directly with an experienced Tax Director and become an important senior point of contact across the portfolio.
What you'll handle
- Managing a varied portfolio of business owners, companies and private clients
- Reviewing personal and corporate tax compliance
- Delivering tax planning and advisory work
- Meeting clients face to face and understanding their wider circumstances
- Managing workflow across junior members of the team
- Reviewing technical work and resolving more complex queries
- Supporting managers and developing junior advisers
- Spotting opportunities for further advisory work
- Contributing to new client relationships where appropriate

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This Mixed Tax Senior Manager position needs someone with genuine breadth. You might lean more heavily towards private client work or have a balanced mixed tax background, but experience solely within corporate tax is unlikely to provide enough exposure to the type of relationships involved.
You'll be joining an accountancy business where tax advisers aren't hidden away as a separate technical function. They sit alongside clients, work closely with the accounts team and become part of the wider advisory relationship.
