Mixed Veterinary Surgeon

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne Area

Salary: Competitive DOE

Job Type: Permanent | Full-Time or Part-Time Considered

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mixed Veterinary Surgeon to join a long-established independent mixed practice in the Newcastle upon Tyne area.

This role would suit a vet with 2+ years' experience who enjoys the variety of mixed practice and is confident with routine consultations, surgery, and occasional sole charge. The caseload is approximately 80% small animal, 15% equine, and 5% farm, providing an excellent balance for someone looking to maintain and develop their mixed practice skills.

The practice is looking for someone who enjoys working as part of a supportive team and is keen to continue developing both clinically and professionally.

About the Practice

This well-established independent practice has been caring for the local community for over 100 years, building a strong reputation for delivering high-quality veterinary care across companion animals, equine patients, and farm animals.

The practice operates across multiple branches, with vets working between sites throughout the week, providing a varied caseload and excellent continuity of care.

One of the standout features of the practice is its own out-of-hours service, giving vets the opportunity to manage a diverse range of emergency cases while working within a highly supportive environment.

Experienced nurses triage all out-of-hours calls before involving the vet, and there is always veterinary support available, ensuring no sole-charge out-of-hours work.

Working Pattern

  • Ideally 3 or 4 days per week
  • Full-time or part-time considered
  • 1 night on call per week
  • 1 in 3 Saturday mornings
  • 1 full weekend on call in every 6 (including Saturday morning)
  • Half-day off following first on-call night (from 1pm)
  • Friday or Monday off after working a full on-call weekend
  • Bank holidays shared equally
  • Work across multiple branch practices

About You

  • RCVS Registered Veterinary Surgeon
  • Minimum 2 years' experience
  • Confident with routine consultations and surgery
  • Comfortable with occasional sole charge
  • Enjoys mixed practice
  • Strong communication and client care skills
  • Friendly, proactive, and collaborative
  • Keen to continue developing clinical skills
