About The Role
The DUE Machine Learning team at Waymo is seeking innovative researchers and software engineers to develop and operate scalable machine learning and data systems, simulation workflows, and insight tools. This role involves enhancing the evaluation and onboarding processes for the Waymo Driver by integrating expert human judgments with advanced machine learning models. The team will focus on building foundational models that improve the realism and accuracy of autonomous vehicle simulations, which are critical for testing and validating the Waymo Driver’s performance. This position is based in London, UK, and involves close collaboration with teams in MTV and Oxford to develop and embed these models into various evaluation and training products.

As part of this hybrid role, you will report to an Engineering Manager and contribute to a world-class research engineering environment. Your work will include designing experiments that push the frontiers of autonomous vehicle simulation, developing metrics to assess simulation realism, training and evaluating large models, and integrating these models into the simulator and downstream applications. You will also play a key role in hiring talented research engineers from diverse backgrounds, fostering a collaborative environment that bridges research ideas with production deployment. The position offers an exciting opportunity to advance state-of-the-art autonomous vehicle technology and contribute to safer, more reliable transportation solutions.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1+ years of people management experience
- 7+ years of applied Deep Learning experience
- 7+ years of coding and system design skills
- Proven ability to solve complex production problems using cutting-edge ML techniques
- Experience transitioning research into scalable production systems
- Expertise in Data Analysis or Data Science
- Strong collaborative and communication skills
- Experience working with large models and simulation environments
- Educational background in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related fields
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of ultra-realistic autonomous vehicle simulations using foundation models
- Collaborate with teams in Waymo Oxford to leverage large models for improving simulation realism
- Design and execute experiments to advance the capabilities of AV simulations
- Develop and refine metrics to evaluate the realism and fidelity of simulated environments
- Train, evaluate, and integrate large machine learning models into simulation platforms and downstream applications
- Participate in hiring efforts to attract outstanding research engineers from diverse backgrounds
- Translate research ideas into scalable, production-ready solutions within the simulation ecosystem
- Contribute to continuous improvement of machine learning workflows and evaluation tools
