Mobile Heavy Goods Vehicle Apprentice
An exciting opportunity for a Mobile Heavy Goods Vehicle Apprentice to support our experienced Maintenance Technicians with servicing and defect repairs at various customer sites. The role provides hands-on training across a range of HGVs. Applicants must hold a driving licence (van will be supplied). The role provides hands-on training across a range of HGVs. Applicants must be able to start work at 5:00am each day from our Dartford location, hold a driving licence (van will be supplied).
Duties
- Assist experienced Mobile Engineers with vehicle servicing, maintenance, and repairs
- Support the diagnosis and rectification of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults
- Assist with vehicle inspections and defect repairs
- Learn to use diagnostic equipment and specialist workshop tools
- Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and safe systems of work
- Maintain tools, equipment, and mobile service vehicles to a high standard
- Develop the skills and knowledge required to become a fully qualified Mobile HGV Engineer
- Attend college/training as required and successfully complete all elements of the apprenticeship programme
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

What You'll Learn
Course Contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately
- The ability to service, inspect, and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem-solving techniques and regimes
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support HV inspection and diagnosing techniques

Training Schedule
The apprenticeship programme usually consists of the following elements:
Knowledge element:
This is the technical certificate and covers the theory side of your work which is delivered when you attend college, so that you can put these newly acquired skills into practice at work
Competence element:
This is the practical side of the programme and is assessed directly within the workplace by a Harlow College Assessor to ensure that you are developing your skills within the workplace and putting all that you learn at college into practice
Functional skills:
This area covers English, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) if not already at Grade 4 GCSE standard
Transferable skills:
These are the skills that help you develop your Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and your rights as an employee within the workplace (ERR)

The duration of the course is 36 months. You will attend college for 1 day a week, and you will be in the workplace for the remaining 4 days
How and When Will I Study?
- IMI NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- Level 2 Functional Skills - English (if required) and Level 2 IT (if required)
- ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities)
- PLTS (Personal Learning and Thinking Skills)

- GCSE in:
- English (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
- Maths (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
Desirable Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- ICT (grade 4)
Other in:
- Valid UK Driving License (grade Car)

This is a mobile position and the starting location will be FCC Environment, Priory Works, Sandpit Road, Dartford, DA1 5BU.
Driving Licence
Essential.
The individual will be provided with a van and fuel card in order to fulfil the mobile aspect of this role.
Some customers will be based in London so the successful candidate will need to be confident in driving in London and also motorways.
Working Hours
Early morning start – 5:00am.
Ordinarily you will not be expected to work beyond 2pm; however, there may be instances outside of our control such as road traffic accidents you may finish later.
Working Conditions
Working outside in warm, cold, wet weather conditions.
