The Role at a Glance
Join our workshop team repairing mobile phones, tablets and smartwatches, with occasional laptops and games consoles.
Previous phone-repair experience is not essential. We can teach someone how to carry out a repair. What we're looking for is much harder to teach: steady hands, patience, concentration, attention to detail, confidence using tools, reliability and pride in doing a job properly.
You'll learn our repair methods and work predominantly on Apple, Samsung and Google devices, carrying out repairs such as screens, batteries, cameras, speakers and charging components.
Experienced technicians are equally welcome, but you'll need to be willing to learn and follow our processes and standards.
Quality comes first. We repair devices properly, follow the correct process and don't take shortcuts.
This Role Is Open to Everyone
Mobile-phone repair can sometimes be perceived as a male-dominated job, but that hasn't been our experience.
Some of our strongest technicians have been women, and our current Workshop Manager is a woman who joined the business from a hospitality background and progressed through the workshop based on her ability and performance.
The Big Phone Store is an equal opportunities employer. We recruit based on ability, attitude and suitability for the role.
You Don't Need to Already Be a Phone Technician
Some of the best technicians we've employed didn't originally come to us as mobile phone technicians.
Technical repair skills can be taught. What matters first is your natural aptitude for the work.
We're interested in people with:
- Good manual dexterity and steady hands
- Strong hand-eye coordination
- Excellent concentration
- Patience and attention to detail
- Confidence using tools
- Reliability and consistency
- Accountability
- The ability to follow instructions accurately
- The ability to remain calm when something is difficult
- Pride in doing work properly
You could already repair phones professionally. You might repair your own electronics or enjoy building PCs, working on cars or bikes, model-making, watches, electronics, engineering or other practical work requiring accuracy and dexterity.
Or you may never have repaired anything professionally before but naturally be very good with your hands.
We're interested in ability, not simply what's written on your CV.
What You'll Be Repairing
The majority of the work will involve mobile phones, tablets and smartwatches, with occasional laptops, games consoles and other consumer technology.
Typical repairs can include:
- Screen and battery replacement
- Camera and speaker replacement
- Charging-port repairs
- Housing and component replacement
- Small component repairs
- Basic soldering where appropriate
- Device disassembly and reassembly

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
Graduate Consultant — 2026 Scheme
Why you're a good match
StrongYour economics background and your summer at a regional bank line up with what PwC looks for on the consulting scheme. Applications close in four weeks.
See breakdownIt searches the market for you
Every day your agent scans the market matching roles against what actually matters to you, not just keywords on a CV.
Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Advanced motherboard work, reballing and complex micro soldering are not the main purpose of this position. Basic soldering experience is useful but isn't essential.
What the Job Actually Looks Like
This is a hands-on workshop role.
Depending on your ability and workload, you may spend periods carrying out one type of repair across multiple devices. As your ability develops, the variety and complexity of your work can increase.
You may be given a specific repair to complete or, depending on your experience, assist with diagnosing faults. You may also carry out device testing and quality checks.
Quality First, Then Speed
Both quality and productivity matter, but quality comes first.
We sell refurbished devices directly to customers, so repairs need to be completed correctly first time. Once you've learned a repair properly, we'll expect you to become quicker and more efficient.
Performance is measured, including repair quality, productivity, consistency and avoidable rework.
We're not looking for someone who rushes through devices and creates problems for somebody else to fix. Equally, once you're competent, we expect you to work at an appropriate commercial pace.
Good repair. Right first time. At an efficient pace.
We Follow Our Processes
Previous experience is valuable, but joining us means being prepared to adapt.
You may have been shown a different way to remove a screen, fit a battery or dismantle a device. Here, you'll be shown our process and the standard we expect.
We don't take unnecessary shortcuts.
Being experienced doesn't mean being unteachable.
Dexterity, Concentration and Patience Matter
Mobile-device repair involves small screws, connectors, flex cables, adhesives, delicate components, specialist tools and valuable devices.
You need to be comfortable carrying out detailed and sometimes repetitive work while maintaining the same level of care.
You should be confident using tools without becoming careless, know when to stop rather than force something and ask when genuinely unsure.
Repairs don't always go perfectly. We need people who can stay calm, think clearly and continue working carefully when something becomes difficult.
Honesty and Accountability
Mistakes can happen, particularly when you're learning.
If you accidentally damage something, we expect you to tell us. We can deal with an honest mistake.
What we don't want is someone hiding what happened, blaming somebody else or hoping nobody notices.
Tell us. Understand what happened. Learn from it. Move on.
Training and Development
We'll show you our methods, processes and standards.
You'll initially work within your capability. Someone with no experience may begin with straightforward tasks before progressing to more complex repairs.
Development depends on your quality, dexterity, reliability, productivity, technical understanding, consistency and judgement.
Longer-term progression can include:
- Senior Technician
- Team Leader
- Workshop Supervisor
- Workshop Manager
Further specialist technical opportunities may also become available.

Excellent English and Communication Are Essential
This role requires an excellent standard of spoken and written English.
You'll need to understand repair instructions, technical terminology, safety information, job notes and device information.
You'll also need to communicate clearly with technicians and supervisors, record information accurately, ask sensible questions and understand and apply feedback.
No Formal Qualifications Required
You don't need:
- A university degree
- A mobile-phone repair qualification
- An electronics qualification
- Previous employment as a technician
Previous repair experience can help and may mean you start at a higher level of pay, but it isn't essential.
We're much more interested in whether you have the natural ability and personal qualities required to become a good technician.
Pay
£12.71–£16.35 per hour

Someone joining with no previous repair experience should expect to begin towards the lower end while learning and demonstrating their ability.
Someone who can already demonstrate strong repair skills, productivity and quality can start higher.
For an exceptional experienced technician who demonstrates ability beyond the standard required for this position, remuneration may be negotiable.

Our Practical Recruitment Assessment
We're not going to decide whether you can become a good technician simply by reading your CV.
Shortlisted candidates will complete a practical assessment.
You may be shown a repair or disassembly process, given an old training device and appropriate tools, and asked to dismantle and rebuild it.
We're not expecting someone without experience to perform like an experienced technician. We'll assess:
- Manual dexterity and concentration
- Care when handling the device
- Ability to follow instructions
- Organisation of components and screws
- Confidence using tools
- Patience and attention to detail
- How you respond when something goes wrong
- The quality of the finished result
We'll also look at your attitude and genuine interest in the role.
You may have never repaired a phone professionally and perform extremely well. You may have years of experience and still need to demonstrate that you can work carefully and follow our methods.
That's why we test ability rather than relying solely on experience.
The Person We're Looking For
We can teach you how to replace a screen or battery and show you how we dismantle and rebuild different devices.
What is much harder to teach is steady hands, patience, concentration, reliability, honesty, confidence and pride in doing a job properly.
If you've got those qualities, we'd like to hear from you.
